011. CONSIDERATION OF REPORT FROM CITIZENS REVIEW COMMITTEE FOR THE DEMONSTRATION'
BICYCLE ROUTE SYSTEM RE: TWO-BLOCK SECTION. OF MILLER AVENUE .BETWEEN SOMERVILLE
DRIVE AND MELINDA C~RCLE
Mrs. Kelly, representing the Bicycle Committee, outlined the proposal and explained
why the Committee felt there was a safer approach t'o solving the. problem of pedes-
trian traffic, particularly elementary school children crossing Miller in this
two-block area. She indicated the Bicycl~ Committee was opposed to any two-way
bikeway because it conflicted ~ith the direction that the educatiohal programs in
b~icycle i~afety have been providing, that mainly being to ride in the same direction
of the traffic flow. She further commented that the suggestion was made for a
flashing yellow warning light to bring to the attention of the motorist that there
were stop signs ahead. She further indicated that the Committee had not recommended
"No Parking" on either side of Miller Avedue in this area, primarily because there
is no problem with parking at the present itime.
The Council then asked a number of questions concerning .the proposal and continued
action on the matter until the August 15th meeting, upon the recommendation of the
staff. This continuance was to allow the traffic consultant to review the recommen-
dations and have a report available for the City Council on the 15th.
III. REQUEST BY SEVERAL RESIDENTS ON MILLER AVENUE FOR FOUR-WAY STOP INTERSECTION AT
MILLER AND NORTHAMPTON AND TRAFFIC CIRCLES AT BROOKVIEW AND MILLER, SOMERVILLE
AND MILLER, BROCKtON AND MILLER, AND NORTHAMPTON AND MILLER.
The Council then discussed the proposed ~qur-way stop sign request on Miller Avenue
at Northampton. They indicated that in light of the proposal'just discussed, the
consideration for traffic circles at this time should be eliminated. Furthermore,
they felt it would be necessary to have the traffic consultant review the impact
of this four-way intersection, as opposed ~to two three-way stops at Melinda Circle
and Somerville on Miller Avenue.
After further discussion, it was moved and seconded that action on this item be
referred to the August 15th meeting and that the traffic consultant be requested
to make comments 'on the effect of these slop signs as they relate to the proposal
