ROLl CALL Present: Councilmen Bridges, Dwyer, Kr~us, Diridon and Smith Absent: None II. CONSIDERATION OF REQUEST FROM ROBERT D. WHITTED, CHAIRMAN, PEOPLE CENTRE CO~_MM.-~f~ FOR CITY TO CONTRIBUTE $2,000'TO $2,500 FOR. THE SUPPORT OF 'THE PEOPLE CENTRE The Mayor introduced the-sUbject b~.indkca6ing that the'Council had. recently. returned from appearing before the Saratoga-Los Gatos High School District Board asking for the School DisCrict's assistance in contributing to the People.Centre. It was generally felt ~y the Cdhncil t~at ~ ~peci£ic proposal should be pre%. sented to the School Board for their consideration, and in this proposal alter- natives should be C~i~n_~.Dhich~mightlbe~bresented to the-Sdhool District. It was felt that it was very important that the School District be a part of this program. Councilman Bridges was concerned about the the Peopl~ Center?" He felt-that if funds are given thatlthey be given for a specific purposeo~ The City~ Council indicated' that if the City were to provide funds for the People Center it would h'ave to be throdgh a contract arrangement through a non-profit entity, which. they are in the process of establishing. Reverand Ponting, pastor ofI the Saratoga United Presbyterian Church, indicated there is a problem of getting in-kind contributions because the problem is basi~za~ly one of cash to pay for the Di~ector's salary.' Further discussion centered around whether.or not the Center shoul~be opened ' immediatel~ ~itb '~'~rovi~ion f6r conti~uity of the program, or whether the Centeri~ should wait until continued funding for the school year has been obtained. Reverand Potting indicated that he felt' very strongly'(t~r~.sh~j_l_~g~_~y~~ continuity to the program as this has been one of the problems-in the past. It was moved'by Councilman Diridon to a~end the motion (taken on October 17) to provide for"a sum up to $3,000 for the People, Centre on a matching basis. This amendment ~f~i~&~u~'Y'jo'la'~?_of a It was then moved by Councilman Bridges. and seconded by Councilman Kraus that the Saratoga City Council stand ready to contribute funds on a limited matching basis to the People Center, subject to the formation of a non-profit corporatioh to manage the Center and subject to approval by the City Council~ of 'the' budget and program to be followed by this group, and the Council ~hould continue to attempt to get the school board involved in the program. The motion was approved 5 to 0. III. OTHER BUSINESS Councilman Diridon raised the issue of whether or not the resolution s.upporting the County sports arena could be discussed this evening. After Some discussion, it was moved by Councilman Diridon and Seconded by Councilman Bridges to adjourn this issue to an Adjourned Regular Meeting on Tuesday, October 30, 1973,'at 6:30 P.M., for the purpose ofdiscussing whether or not the City Council should support the advisory measure of an indoor sports arena for the November 6, 1973 election. In addition, it was moved and seconded that there be a Executive Session scheduled following the Committee of!the. Whole Me~ting on October-30.- This motion was approved. -. IV. ADJOURNMENT It was moved and seconded to adjourn this meeeing to An Adjourned Regular Meeting on Tuesday, October 30, 1973, followed by an Executive Session.~he motion was carried.
