HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-19-1984 City Council Minutes MINUTES SARATCGA CITY COUNCIL TIME: Tuesday, June 19, 1984 - 7:00 p.m. PLACE: Ccr~nunity Center, 19655 Allendale Avenue TYPE: Adjourned Regular Meeting Councilmembers Callon, Clevenger, Fanelli, Mallory and Mayor Meyles were present at 7:00 p.m. 1. Report from Deputy City Clerk on Official Canvass of Ballots fram County Registrar of Voters Deputy City Clerk reported that the official canvass of ballots of the June, 1984 election had confirmed the semi-official results indicating that Martha Clevenger had been re-elected and 'Joyce Hlava elected to the City Council for four-year te~ms ending in June, 1988. 2. Resolution of City Council Approving Official Canvass and Approving Results Thereof MOYLES/MALLORY MDVED ADOPTION OF RESOLUTION 2154 DECLARING THE RESULTS OF THE ELECTION OF MEMBERS TO THE CITY COUNCIL AT THE ELECTIUN OF JUNE 5, 1984. Passed 5-0. 3. Cc~nents from Councilmembers Councilmembers welcomed Ms. Hlava to the Council end congratulated Councilmember Clevenger on her re-election. Councilmember Mallory reviewed his experiences during his te~n of office and expressed appreciation for the opporturiity to have served the ca~¥u~r~ity to the best of his ability in his own independent fashion. He then congratulated Councilmember Clevenger and Ms. Hlava on their election. Councilmember Clevenger thanked her campaign ~Drkers for their efforts On her behalf and cc~nented on the fairness and lack of acrimony of the campaign. She felt that the residents were aware of the issues and watchful, although they considered the City 'to be well run. She noted that she would bring a list of concerns expressed by citizens to her to a future study session, and she expressed her anticipation at working with the Council, staff and residents for another tenn. Mayor ~oyles thanked Councilmember Mallory 'for his devotion to Saratoga and c~nplimented him on his dedication to his principles. He con~ented on Council= member Mallory' s unsullied integrity and his careful preparation for meetings of the City Council. He then thanked Councilmember Mallory and presented him with a gift to caf~e~Drate his term on the Council. Mayor Mayles also expressed the gratitude of the community to Louise Schaefer and RObert Egan, who ran creditable election campaigns. 4. ~ministration of Oath of Office to Newly-Elected M~nbers of City Council Martha Clevenger and Joyce Hlava took the Oath of Office. 5. Ccr~nents from M~nbers of the City Council Councilmember Hlava thanked her campaign workers and stated that she was looking forward to working hard for the next four years. Councilmember Clevenger stated how much she had enjoyed working with Councilmember Mallory and appreciated his honesty and 'sincerity. 6. Reorganization of City Council (Electon of Mayor and Vice Mayor for one- year terms) ~ City Manager called for ncrninations for Mayor and Vice Mayor, noting that the ncmination did not require a second. Councilmember Callon ncrainated Virginia Fanelli as Mayor. There were no other ncminations. MOYLES/CLEVENGER MOVED TO CLOSE NOMINATIONS FOR MAYOR. Passed 5-0. HLAVA/CLEVENGER NDVED TO APPOINT FANE. LLI AS MAYOR BY UNANIMOUS ACCLAMATION. Passed 5-0. City Manager called for ncrninations for Vice Mayor. Councilmember Moyles nominated Martha Clevenger as Vice Mayor. Councilmember Fanelli seconded the ncmination. There were no other ncrainations. CALLON/HLAVA MOVED TO CLOSE NOMINATIONS FOR MAYOR. Passed 5-0. HLAVA/MOYLES MOVED TO APPO~lqT CLEVENGER AS VICE MAYOR BY UNANIMOUS ACCLAMATION. Passed 5-0. Mayor Fanelli congratulated Councilmember Clevenger and thanked the Council for appointing her as Mayor. She noted the initiation of the Ccr~nunity Sevice Officer Program and the Pavanent Manag~nent Program and set as goals the bringing of these programs to fruition. She stated the Council would actively support the tax measure intended to fund the Pavenent Management Program. Mayor Fanelli also pointed out the importance of working more closely with the ca~,l,~ssions. She thanked Councilmember Mayles for leading the City during his term as Mayor and presented him with a gift as outgoing Mayor. The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m. Respectfully suhnitted, Grace E.
