JOINT MEETING WITH LIBRARY COMMISSION - 7:50 p.m. Commission Chair Newby reviewed the activity of the Commission in working toward making the library more useful to the community. One area of concentration is physical improvements, which were accelerated by the earthquake. In response to Mrs. Anderson's question, the Commission agreed that Librarian Dolly Barnes' initial response to the earthquake and her efforts in putting the library back together after severe damage to the book stacks and furnishings are deserving of commendation by the Council. Sunday hours - attendance continues to climb, by 40% in the past 18 months; from September to September circulation increased 53%, and gate count more than doubled.. The Council agreed to go to funding of 51 weeks for $25,097 for 1990-91. There is need to look at expanded Sunday hours versus opening on Thursday nights, plus adding more staff on Sundays if attendance trend continues. This to be studied for possible budget recommendation for 1991-92. Need for Floor Space Expansion - Review of five reasons for need to expand space at the library. These are technological advances, expand book collection rather than keep static, reconfigure stacks to provide wider aisles and lower stacks, more user and staff work space, addition of a quiet/study room. Council agreed there was a need to continue studying the problem. Need for Sign at Corner - Don Peterson offered to have Rotary do the sign as a community service project. ~ - Agreement on need for Master Plan, but it should be part of an expansion plan so area can be coordinated.
