AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA AMENDING
ORDINANCE 4A. BY ENDING CERTAIN. SECTIONS OF
THE .1952 EDITION OF THE UNIFORM BUILDING CODE
THEREIN ADOPTED BY REFERENCE REGARDING SNAKE
ROOFS.IN CERTAIN TYPES OF. OCCUPANCY.
The City Council of the City of Saratoga does. hereby ordain as
follows:
SECTION 1:
Section 1.1: Section 11~1.2-3.13. and 11.1~2-3.14 are hereby
added to Title 11, Article 1, Chapter 1 of the
Santa Clara County Ordinance Code as adopted by reference in
Section 1.1 of Ordinance 4A of 2the City of Saratoga=
Section 11.1.2-3.13: Section 1704 of the 1952 Edition
of the Uniform Building Code is
hereby amended to read as follows:
Section 1704 "Roof Coverings". Roof covering shall be
"fire-retardant" except in Type V building housing
GroupsH, I or J occupancies, where it may be as speci-
fied in, Section.3204 (f).
Skylights shall be constructed as required in ~Cha~ter
34.
Penthouses shall be constructed as required in Chapter
36.
EXCEPTION: Roofs of cedarfor redwood shakes having a
nominal thickness of one inch (1") at the butt may be
used inbuildings of Group]B, Division 3, GroUp C,
Group F, Divisions 1 and 2, occupancies of Type V con-
struction, where there are no general requirements for
fire resistance, provided that the horizontal clearance
between cornice and proper~ lines, except street
fronts, is not less than ten feet (10'~, and provided
further there shall be not less than 2~ solid T and G
wood sheathing for the same. This provision Shall be
applicable only in Fire Zone No. 3.
Section 11.1.2-3.14: There is hereby added to Section
3204 (f) of the 1952 Edition of
the Uniform Buildin~ Code ~he following Subsection 10.1:
10.1: HAND-SPLIT SNAKES:. All hand-split shakes shall
be of Western Red Cedar or Redwood conforming to
U.B.C. Standard No.. 32-2-58, and shall bear the label of
an approved linspection bureau or agency guaranteeing
compliance with U.B.C. Standard No. 32-2-58.

Shakes shall be laid with one and one-half inch (1½")
minimum side lap between joints in adjacent courses.~
Shakes shall be laid in straight or staggered courses
with eighteen inch (18") wide strips for 30-pound minimum
satu~,.ated felt shingled-in between each course with the
lo~er edge of the felt positioned above the butt a dis-
tance equal to twice the shake weather exposure. Double
course at the eaves, and the underlay course can be
eighteen inch (18") ,shakes ~r shingles, or twenty-four
inch (24") shingles. ]
Each shake shall.be fastened with two rust-resistant
nails of adequate length tO penetrate into sheathing at
least three-fourths inch (3~4").
Valleys shall be underlaid With 30-pound minimum saturated
felt extending at least te~ inches (10")' on each side of
center line. Sheathing at 'crown of-hips and ridges shall
be covered with 30-pound minimum saturated felt at least
twelve inches (12") wide. ,
Sheathing may be eithe~ spaced or solid, except that in
snow areas sheathing shall be solid and covered with un-
saturated building paper, unless the roof pitch is eight
inches (8") to twelve inches (12") or steeper.
Exposure to weather shall not exceed eight and one-half
inches (8½"), ten inches (1,0"), and thirteen inches (13")
for eighteen inch (18"), twenty-four inch (24")' and thirty-
two inch (32") shakes,.respectively; except that weather
exposure of eighteen inch (G18") and twenty-four inch (24")
straight-split or barn sha~es.shall not exceed five and one-
half inches (5½") and seven and one-half inches (7½"), re-
spectively. -Edges shall be parallel within one inch-(l").
Shakes shall'not be installed on roofs having a pitch less
than four inches (4") to twelve inches (12") except that
roofs of porches or.attached garages, or roofs over clipped
ceilings having'an area not exceeding 20 per cent of the
total roof area, may have a pitch of not less than three
inches (3") to twelve inches (12").
SECTION 2:
Section 2.1: If any section, .subsection, sentence, clause or
phrase of this ordinance is for any reason held
by a 'court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, such decis-
ion shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of
this ordinance. The City Council of the City of Saratoga hereby
declares that it would have passed this ordinance and each
section, subsection, sentence, clause and phrase thereof, ir-
respective of the fact that any one or more sections, sub~
sections, sentences, clauses or phrases be held invalid or
unconstitutional.
This ordinance was regularly in~troduced and after the waiting
time required by law was thereafter passed and adopted this 4th
day of May, 1960, by the following vote:
