ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA
AMENDING THE SARATOGA CITY CODE BY
AMENDING SECTION 16-15.100 CONCERNING
ROOF MATERIAL IN THE HAZARDOUS FIRE AREA
The City Council of the City of Saratoga hereby ordains as follows:
SECTION 1= Section 16-15o100 of the City Code is hereby amended to
read as follows:
ee§16-15o100 Section 3201 amended concerning roof covering
Section 3201 of the Building Code is amended to read as
follows:
Sec. 3201. Roofs shall be as specified in this code and as
otherwise required by this chapter.
Roof coverings shall be securely fastened to the supporting roof
construction and shall provide weather protection for the building
at the roof.
Skylights shall be constructed as required in Chapter 34.
Penthouses shall be constructed as required in Chapter 36.
For use of plastics in roofs, see Chapter 52.
For solar collectors located above or upon a roof, see Section
1714.
The foregoing provisions notwithstanding, roof coverings on all
buildings and structures hereafter erected or constructed in the
hazardous fire area in the City, shall be fire-retardant complying
with the standards established for Class A roofing material. All
replacement roofing for existing buildings and structures in the
hazardous fire area shall comply with this requirement, except that
replacement of less than 10 percent of the total roof area shall be
exempt.
This amendment to the Uniform Building Code, 1991 Edition, is
required because of the temperatures, winds and other climatic
conditions which promote the spread of fire and the danger of fire
in the event of an earthquake. In addition, special precautions are
needed for buildings located in the hazardous fire area because
response time of emergency equipment to calls for aid in such areas
is impaired due to: (1) the nonavailablity of access to some
portions of the hazardous fire area, (2) the existence of steep,
narrow streets and roadways in the hazardous fire area, (3) the
lack of connecting streets or roadways in the hazardous fire area.
Further, the presence of heavy vegetation in the hazardous fire
areas increase the potential for rapid spread of fire which may
start in those ares particularly during seasonal dry spells.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council, City of Saratoga, State of
California, this 20th day of January, 1993 by the following vote:
