HomeMy WebLinkAbout101-Staff Report.pdf SARATOGA CITY COUNCIL MEETING DATE: April 20, 2011 AGENDA ITEM: DEPARTMENT: Public Works CITY MANAGER: Dave Anderson PREPARED BY: Kristin Borel DIRECTOR: John Cherbone Public Works Analyst SUBJECT: Motor Vehicle (MV) Resolution reducing speed on Sobey Road RECOMMENDED ACTION: Move to adopt MV Resolution reducing speed on a portion of Sobey Road REPORT SUMMARY: The City was contacted by residents about safety on Sobey Road near Marshall Lane Elementary School. The residents are concerned about cars speeding through this corridor because of the large number of pedestrians walking to and from the school. The Traffic Safety Commission and Traffic Engineer reviewed the request at the January 13, 2011 meeting and recommended that the speed limit on Sobey be reviewed. Fehr & Peers analyzed the speeds and conditions on Sobey Road and is recommending lowering the speed limit on Sobey Road near Marshall Lane School from 30 mph to 25 mph. In order to enforce the new reduced speed limit, it is necessary that the attached Motor Vehicle Resolution be adopted by City Council. FISCAL IMPACTS: Approximately $250 in labor and materials is required for the City to post the sign. These improvements are paid through the CIP which has a fund devoted to Traffic Safety. CONSEQUENCES OF NOT FOLLOWING RECOMMENDED ACTION: The MV Resolution would not be adopted and traffic conditions would continue as is. ALTERNATIVE ACTION: None in addition to the above. FOLLOW UP ACTION: The speed limit signs will be installed and the Sheriff’s Department and Marshall Lane School will be notified of the new restriction.
