Re: Agenda Item 3 — Commendation for Matt Torrens
Attached is the commendation for Matt Torrens.
Ann Sullivan, CMC
City Clerk
COMMENDATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA
HONORING
Matt Torrens, History Teacher Extraordinaire
WHEREAS, Matt Torrens received his BA from Brigham Young University and MA in History
from San Jose State. Matt has taught for 15 years, one year in Washington, D.C., four years in Utah, and ten
at Saratoga High School. In ten years Mr. Torrens has taught World History, Geography, and APUS history
at SHS; and
WHEREAS, Matt's family, his wife Debbie, daughter Sydney (13), sons Tyler (9), Drew (8), and
Landon (3) have shared their father with his extended family of students for many years. Debbie says Matt
eats, sleeps and breathes History; it's his career and his hobby. He has a natural gift for sharing History with
others in enthusiastic and meaningful ways. Debbie is grateful that he chose to become a teacher because lie
returns home happy at the end of the day, and he is spending his career teaching others to appreciate and
avoid the mistakes of the past; and
WHEREAS, Matt Torrens has run 4 one -week long Wild Wild West history trips to southeastern
Utah. Matt took 54 students and chaperones to the Inauguration in 2009, where he had a surprise visit from
the FBI. Matt has driven students to Pasadena, Long Beach and several times to Sacramento to compete in
the state History Day competition; and
WHEREAS, Matt Torrens has served for seven years at Saratoga High as the School Site Council
Chairperson and the last two years as Staff Development Coordinator. He is the Model United Nations
Advisor, the sophomore class Advisor, and the Cricket Club Advisor; and
WHEREAS, Natalie says Mr. Torrens has been encouraging her work as a leader in the community
and at school. He brightened even the worst days of her junior year with his hilarious introductions to his
lectures and his activities. Mike Davey thinks the most apparent thing about Matt is that he cares. He cares
about his peers' feelings, the education and experiences of his students, and about his family. Kathy Waite
said "Matt Torrens is one of the most amazing teachers I've experienced over my entire life. He's tireless,
inspiring, knowledgeable, caring, and understands high school students. He's a teacher that changes students'
lives." Mridula says Mr. Torrens is a friend, an advisor, a coach, and best of all, a cheerleader for the
countless students who pass through his classroom year after year. Alex said Matt is dedicated and inspiring;
and
WHEREAS, Principal Jeff Anderson said, "While Saratoga High is blessed with many outstanding
teachers; Matt really stands out due to his humor, dedication and deep caring for all his students. The amount
of time that he puts in just planning trips for his students is astonishing. If you ask most ju►liors or seniors at
SHS, they will talk endlessly about their experiences either in his class on one of his highly regarded field
trips. I have been on two trips with him and they were two of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in
over 20 years in education. I am thankful to be associated with him." Karen Hyde said, "At Saratoga High
School, many, many, many students, when reflecting on that "one" teacher who made a difference, that "one"
teacher who motivated them more than others, that "one" teacher who lit the spark of education will name
Matt Torrens."
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Saratoga does hereby
proclaim recognition and appreciation of Matt Torrens because he loves history and he loves his students.
WITNESS MY HAND AND THE SEAL OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA on this 16 "' day of June

Support for Matching Grant discussion
Dear Mayor King and City Council
I am unable to attend the Council meeting on June 16th when you will be discussing the SASCC
request for a Matching Grant made on the May 19th Council Meeting. I believe the wording ill
the minutes will be discussed.
Perhaps my email can clarify what the request was for.
The purpose of SASCC's original request was to help in the SASCC Board of Directors' fund
raising activities. The SASCC Board is trying to replenish investment monies which also
include the original endowment from Mrs.
Saunders. We would like to return to the practice of using the profits from SASCC
investments and not have to use some of the principal. However, the caveat to the above
statement is that even after all of the operating costs have been reduced to bare minimum
this year, we may still need to dip into the investments or close programs completely.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely
Ann Waltonsmith
Board Vice President

Subject: Second story initiative -- Please place on Nov Ballot
Dear Council Members,
I urge you to place the "Second Story Height Initiative " on the November ballot. Also please temporarily keep height limits
developments until this issue is settled by an election. Considering Saratogans resistance to large developments in the
Village, El Quito and Gateway areas and the general distrust towards any developer, I feel certain that sufficient
signatures will be collected to place this on the ballot. However, I doubt it can be done in time for the November election
deadline, so the City would need to pay for a special election. I feel it is a financially responsible move for the council to
place the initiative on the November ballot themselves. This is a very controversial issue, akin to Measure G, so it should
go to a general public vote.
No matter how you feel about the height limitations, the city cannot afford to waste money on a special election in these
hard financial times, and there is no reason the public can't decide this for themselves.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Katie Alexander
