REPORT TO MAYOR AND
CITY COUNCIL
DATE: 1/21/83
COUNCIL MEETING: 2/ 2/83
SUBJECT: Appropriation for,Resurfacing of Saratoga High. School
Tennis Court
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The City recently received a request for a $2,500 contribution
to renovate the Saratoga High: School tennis court. The total
cost of the project is estimated at $14,000. Other sources of
contributions include the Saratoga.High Athletic Booster Club,
the Los Gatos /Saratoga Recreation Department and the Associated
Student Body.
The City will benefit from the $2,500 contribution. At the
present time the eight courts in - question represent a public
asset. There are no public tennis courts on any of our City
maintained parks. Therefore, these eight courts meet a recrea-
tional need of the City.

Dear Council Members:
When was the last time you played a fast set of tennis on the Saratoga High
courts? Well, if that was you out there, I suspect you're all too aware of
the court conditions. Our courts are used extensively by our community and
it's time to do a little renovation. Our estimates are that it will take
approximately $14,000 to do the job and we're out trying to drum up the
money. I realize that money is a pretty scarce commodity right now for
institutions such as ours, but the need for services continues and we still
try to provide those services. The school district will contribute $2,500
to the cause and the Los Gatos /Saratoga Recreation Department will contribute
another $2,500. The Saratoga High Athletic Booster Club has committed
$4,000, and I believe I can convince the ASB (Associated Student Body) to
come up with $2,500. That leaves us about $2,500 short of our goal and I'm
asking you to contribute this last portion of the cost.
If you'll drop by the school on a weekend to see the current use or remember
their use on the warm, early evenings in the Spring and Fall, you'll agree
that these eight tennis courts are very heavily used by drop -in players from
our community. At this point, the deteriorization of the surface has reached
the dangerous stage. There are fissures which make the surface as much an
obstacle course as a tennis court. I don't really have anything against
obstacle courses, but I suspect our community would rather play tennis.
Are you interested in joining our venture?
Sincerely
CSe
