SARATOGA CITY COUNCIL
MEETING DATE: August 17, 2011 AGENDA ITEM:
DEPARTMENT: City Manager’s Office CITY MANAGER: Dave Anderson
PREPARED BY: Crystal Morrow DIRECTOR: Dave Anderson
Administrative Analyst II
SUBJECT: Saratoga Monte Sereno Community Foundation Scott Petersen Memorial Collection
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Accept donated funds collected by Saratoga Monte Sereno Community Foundation in memory of
Scott Petersen for the Saratoga Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
BACKGROUND:
Scott Petersen, a Saratoga resident, passed away in May 2011. Scott was an active member of the
community, volunteering for KSAR and the Saratoga CERT program. Because Scott was so
deeply involved in CERT, his family suggested that those wishing to honor Scott’s memory
make donations to Saratoga CERT. Consequently, the Saratoga Monte Sereno Community
Foundation began accepting donations to the CERT program made in honor of Scott. A total of
$1,180 has been raised.
CERT is comprised of volunteers that have been trained to assist with emergency operations
during a disaster. Volunteers in the CERT program are a key element of the City’s emergency
operations and perform a wide range of duties from damage assessment, first aide, basic fire
fighting, and light search and rescue.
As stated on the Saratoga Monte Sereno Community Foundation website, the Foundation is a
non-profit umbrella organization created to improve the quality of life for residents in both
Saratoga and Monte Sereno through philanthropy. The Foundation was developed after members
of the community identified a need for a conduit through which the community could contribute
resources.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
If accepted, the memorial funds will be set aside for use by the City’s CERT program.
CONSEQUENCES OF NOT FOLLOWING THE RECOMMENDED ACTIONS:
The memorial funds will not be accepted on behalf of CERT.
