Dear Mr. and Mrs. Long:
The Saratoga Heritage Preservation Commission has recently
completed a comprehensive Inventory of historic resources in our
community. We are pleased to notify you that your commercial
buildings at 14521 and 14630 Big Basin Way meets the criteria for
being included on this list.
The purpose of the Heritage Resource Inventory is to establish a
list of documented historic properties in Saratoga. The Heritage
Preservation Commission was assigned the responsibility for
preparing the Inventory by the City Council in 1982. Each
property on the list has been identified as reflecting and being a
part of the unique history of Saratoga. The Inventory has been
prepared in accordance with guidelines established by the State
Office of Historic Preservation, with data gathered from a
variety of sources, including historic documents and books,
interviews with local citizens, and existing county and state
inventories that contain information on Saratoga properties.
Being listed on the Inventory does not carry any form of special
requirements or restrictions` affecting the use, improvement,
alteration or even the demolition of your property. As an
Inventory property, however, you will be able to make use of the
State Historic Building Code, an alternative set of building
regulations that are intended to facilitate the rehabilitation and
preservation of historic buildings. In addition, your property
may qualify for designation as a Saratoga Heritage Landmark, a
special category of outstanding and exemplary historic properties
that are identified in the community by a handsome bronze plaque.
We have enclosed the entire Inventory list and the individual
Inventory form for your property, which gives information about
the building, the property and its history. We would appreciate
your review of this form to let us know if there are any changes
or additions to the form you wish to include. We also anticipate
that there are additional historic resources in the community that
we may have overlooked or have not fully documented yet; if you
know of any that are not on the list, please let us know.
If you have any questions,

The original owner and builder of this house was John Henry, the engineer

McCarty and built his home here in 1869. The home is built of local
clearheart redwood and square nails typical of the period. There is still
a well at the rear of the property. Mr. Henry sold his residence shortly
after the Saratoga Paper Mill burned in 1883. Various families have since
owned the property including the Mevio and Patterson families. The
Patterson family was the last to use this building as a residence, and it

JOHN HENRY HOUSE
14630 Big Basin Way, Saratoga
The community of McCartysville was first surveyed in November 1852
and later resurveyed in December 1863 showing the main street as Lumber
Street with Oak Street to the southeast and the creek to the northwest.
Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, and St. Charles Streets divided the
village area. There were basically eleven blocks of "city" lots and Lot
9 of Block 11 was purchased in 1868 by John Henry from Hannah McCarthy.
This lot is located on the southeast corner of Lumber Street and Sixth:
Street. Mr. Henry was the engineer for the only industry in Saratoga at
that time, the Saratoga Paper Mill, which opened officially on September
3, 1868 by the corporation of King, Meyer and Company. The lot that Mr.
Henry purchased was not far from the mill.
The house was built along the lines of the "Pioneer" style of architecture
and consisted of a parlor, two bedrooms without closets, and a kitchen -
dining- living room.' A well'was dug at the rear and bath facilities were
limited, The structure was built of clear redwood with the typical square
nails of the period. The walls consisted of top and bottom plates with
two layers of 1." thick redwood installed between, both horizontally and
vertically. A form of heavy building paper was installed between these
members. The roof was gabled over the main section with the typical shed
roof for the kitchen - dining - living area, and was covered with hand -split
redwood shingles. The flooring was tongue-and grooved clear pine and was
probably enhanced with hand - braided rugs. Historical records indicate
that John Henry constructed his home in'1869.
On April 17, 1883 the Saratoga Paper Mill burned. The mill was owned by
a company.of which A. Pfister was president, however it was run by the
King Brothers, one of whom was Edwin King, whose home was just across the
street from the John Henry house. Again historical records indicate that
Mr. Henry sold his home shortly thereafter. Various families have owned
the home including the Mevio family and the Patterson family, who were the
last family to occupy the building as a residence. The building has been
us.ed as the, office of Warren Heid, Archi.tect, since 1163,
The building was added to through the years, however it still remains in

the same style as originally constructed. The interior door frames and
several doors are original. The doorframes, both exterior and interior
at the origi.nal, structure, are in place and are constructed of clear red-
wood. The "root cellar still exists as does the well in the rear yard.
The front. porch,- :bath, and added sitting area to the original kitchen have•
been added and /or remodeled as needed, and the windows to the east had
to be closed -in for fire regulations due to the location on the property.
This building. represents a style of residence that was prevelent in the,
community in the 1860/1870 period. Hopefully it will remain for many more
years as part of Saratoga's historical heritage.
