This pioneer cottage is located in an area known in early Saratoga as "Poverty Flat." It was built in the late 1800's probably by James Randolph Stamper. James' brother, Elbert, was married to Clara Cox, the eldest daughter of orchardist and early Saratoga settler John Cox. They had three children Arthur, Evelyn and Donald. Jim Stamper was a single man, and he left the property to his nephew, Donald, in the early 1930's. The Stampers were an early pioneer family in Saratoga. Elbert, who had come from Kentucky, was the village constable for twenty -three years. This farmhouse, which is surrounded by orchards, is still in the Stamper family.
