NABEHA BARKATULLAH
I should be elected to the Youth Commission since I have experience of leadership being the
founder and president of the Green Team. I started the Green Team to help my community, and what
better way to help out my community than being part of youth council.
Also I have a flexible schedule for community events. I will always try my hardest to find ways to
help out. And I have a lot of great ideas like making the green team a city team, and Restaurants to sell
organic food. I could be useful to Saratoga.

In 100 words or less, tell us why you should be appointed to the Saratoga Youth Commission
Being a Saratoga resident and President of student council during elementary and middle
school,I have learned how communities functions, and how to keep people inspired. If appointed to
Youth Commission,I will bring novel ideas and energy to create events that will integrate all
Saratoga schools. For example, youth commission could organize larger Bay-Area conferences,
bringing the youth of multiple communities together.I can communicate and effectively publicize
ideas.I loved the experience of attending four youth commission meetings in 2014, and the Arbor
Day celebration.I know that Youth commision is the first step for making Saratoga greater.
Besides school, what other activities(e.g.sportstheater,church, etc.)will you be
involved in during the 2014---15 school year?
During the 2014-2015 school year,I will be involved with Java programming,Guitar,Speech and

1. I should be appointed to the Saratoga Youth Commission because I bring a lot of good ideas to
the table to improve this beautiful city. We are so lucky to be living in this great city with many
nice facilities and parks and more. I would like to encourage the children or youth of the city to
enjoy Saratoga more by introducing more community activities like walkathons and cleaning
parks. We can make Saratoga even greener by encouraging people to walk or bike rather than use
cars which emit many poisonous gases into the air. We can also try to make Saratoga .
carbon-neutral by planting trees and creating awareness among the community. I would make a
positive contribution if I were given a chance to serve on the commission.
2. Throughout the 2014-2015 school year, I will be involved in playing club volleyball and other
volunteer activities over the weekend.

I believe I should be on the Saratoga Youth Commission because I want to help Saratoga make
decisions which will impact the city in a way that will benefit everyone. Being a sports team captain
has helped me develop skills to work well with others. I am persuasive and persistent, and I have
out-of-the-box ideas that will expose the youth of Saratoga to various, new activities. For example,
Saratoga could hold stargazing parties for kids, as well as adults, to help learn about astronomy,
while still having fun. I hope to be a great addition to the Commission.
2. Besides school, what other activities(e.g. sports, theater, church, etc.) will you be involved in during the

The Saratoga Youth Commission provides me with an opportunity to be a voice to and represent the
youth of the city and neighboring communities in local government while building friendships. I found
that the topics covered at the meeting that I attended to be interesting and beneficial to the youth. The
Commission discussed the Walk-One-Week event that it was planning to sponsor at the Elementary
Schools to encourage students to walk or bike to school. This would reduce the carbon footprint for a
few days as fewer cars would be on the roads and would provide exercise to the students.

1. In 100 words or less, tell us why you should be appointed to the Saratoga
Youth Commission?
Metaphorically, a community is analogous to the several parts in a car; each
component is crucial to the vehicle's ability to function properly, and if one part is
missing or underserved, the entire machine will not operate at its full potential.
Likewise, each citizen is an important piece to an overall community. If appointed,
my main objective would be to create excitement and raise awareness among the
youth about our community. Through thoughtfully planned activities and events, I
hope to empower my peers that we can truly be a catalyst for positive change.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Saratoga, CA 95070
Honors English 1 The Study of Teacher(s): Andy Wicklund
Alex is prospering in Honors English 1. He demonstrates a genuine love of learning and an openness to criticism. After
the first essay,he came in during Extra Help twice to discuss my comments, which says much about his work habits. He
is a consistent volunteer and has even served as discussion leader for one of our short stories. His thoughts accentuate his
sharp comprehension and analysis of texts. I have utmost confidence in Alex's abilities. He should continue to work hard
and seek additional help when needed.
Honors Algebra 2&Trigonometry Teacher(s): Dana Lieberman
Alex is a terrific student and excellent role model in the class. He completes his homework along with notes to himself
about any corrections he needs to make,he was very conscientious about coming to extra help before a planned absence
for a school event, and whenever there is board work he is ready to volunteer and even helps organize his peers in
sharing solutions. Alex has a very good quiz average and had excellent results on his first test. I know his second test was
a disappointment to him,and he had a number of careless errors which he can fit as part of the test corrections process.
His work did not demonstrate any concerning concept errors, and I have encouraged him to make use of the time before
Period 1 for any questions he might have. I look forward to Alex's continued progress this year.
Honors Physics Teacher(s): Lisa Radice
Alex is an amiable and conscientious member of this class. His homework effort is very good and he works well with his
peers. While his performance on quizzes indicates that he has a solid grasp of the fundamental ideas,he has not been
quite as successful on tests. If Alex starts actively looking for connections between different concepts on a daily basis
(both in class and on his homework),then he will be better prepared to use that level of sophisticated thinking on tests. In
addition, before each test,I post a review sheet with practice problems on Athena2. I advise students to treat the review
like a practice test and I post solutions so that they can check their work. I looked to see when Alex accessed the
Kinematics Review and solutions and found that he did not do so until the day before the test. In the future,I think that it
will be helpful for Alex to complete the review questions early enough that he has time to check his answers, reflect on
the questions he missed, find his mistakes, and try to correct them. Then,if he has any questions after going through that
process,Alex will still have time to see me to discuss any material that is giving him trouble. Given how well Alex is doing
overall,I am not worried about his test performance, but I think that Alex is capable of doing even better and I would like
to help him reach the next level. I congratulate Alex on a strong start and look forward to more fine work from him as the
semester progresses.
Alex Ha-Sang Youn Grade: 9
Honors World History 1 Teacher(s): Ruth Meyer
Alex is a natural leader and a very valuable member of the class. He has led his group in many interesting class debates
and has maintained excellent test scores thus far. He seems to take all of the assignments in his stride and is always does
his best. I particularly enjoyed his recent presentation on the explorer Marco Polo. He was clear, confident and well
organized. Well done,Alex!
Latin 3 Teacher(s): John Hawley
Alex Youn
In Latin 3 we are completing the Cambridge Latin Course in Book 4. Up to now students have been reading mostly
adapted Latin, and they are now encountering authentic unadapted texts for the first time. Gradually, all the texts will be
original, and we will have mastered most of the basic grammar and vocabulary that allows us to read more complex
strucnues.
Alex has been a spark plug for our discussions from day one. He is often the one to come up with the correct vocabulary
definition or to bring up a point of grammar that helps us all read some difficult passages. It is obvious that he has done
the work needed to comprehend the intricacies of Latin vocabulary and grammar. If students are having a difficult time
reading a text,I can count on Alex to comment and steer the reading in the right direction.
Study of Music Teacher(s): Susan Nace
Alex is a good-hearted student with a sincere desire to do everything to the best of his ability. I appreciate his pro-active
behavior, too. Although keeping organized is a small challenge for him,he employs wonderful techniques to keep himself
on track, including checking in with me for affirmation and for many details he needs to complete his work. I'm really
excited about Alex's engagement in this class as the activities and assignments seem to be geared in the way that he
needs to learn, and he is embracing the challenges whole-heartedly and with a positive attitude. He is a joy to have in
class;his positive, respectful attitude and sense of humor keep the class environment lively and fun.
Journalism:Yearbook Teacher(s): Ellen Austin
I have enjoyed getting to know Alex in yearbook this fall in a class that is a mixed classroom of all age levels. He has a
great sense of news and journalism, and it is rare that we talk about a story in the news that he hasn't heard about or
know something more to mention. He has a solid affect in his interviewing style and ability to speak with people, and that
is core to building strong journalism skills. He seems confident in contributing to discussions in a class that has a good
number of upperclassmen, and his writing is developing quickly as he learns more journalistic rules and styles. As the
semester goes on,I look forward to seeing him developing his journalist's tool kit!

First and foremost, I have leadership experience. As current freshman class secretary and former
Social Chair for Miller Middle School, I understand how to organize and execute events, including
dances and fundraisers. I am also very committed and involved. I am not only involved in our school
politics (ASB) but also various clubs and organizations like Yearbook. My involvement has given me

during the 2014-15 school year, I plan to participate in several activities. My after school activities
are limited to the seasonal school sports of water polo (fall) and swimming (spring). Additionally, I

1. In 100 words or less, tell us why you should be appointed to the Saratoga Youth Commission?
I have lived in Saratoga all my life, and I would love to give back to my community. I am a great
candidate for the YC position, as I already have experience organizing events and promoting them
to the spectrum of youth in my circles.
I communicate easily with kids of all ages, and I have also helped to plan and promote multiple
events at school. Specifically, I have assisted organizing several fundraisers, high school spirit
activities, and Lynbrook Interact's "International Night" show & Lynbrook American-Indo Student
Association's "Silsilay" show-- both of which raised thousands of dollars for their causes.
2. Besides school, what other activities(e.g. sports, theater, church, etc.)will you be involved in during the
2014-15 school year?
I play club soccer for Sunnyvale Alliance (Extreme 99G) and am on the Lynbrook High School
Soccer team. I intend to keep playing through my school years.
I learn Kathak, a classical Indian dance form, and am also a substitute instructor for the youngest
classes. I will continue dancing, with around four performances a year.

I should be appointed to the Saratoga Youth Commission because I will
come up with activities that engage Saratoga's youth. Additionally, I have
leadership abilities, as I was a member of the student council in middle and
elementary school, allowing me to successfully organize community service
events. This year, I was on the Benefit Fashion Show organizing committee,
which raised money for the St. Jude's Children Hospital. I also encouraged
physical activity in Saratoga youth by being an assistant field hockey coach for
young girls. Outside of Saratoga, I tutor children from low income families as a
part of a charitable organization.

1. In 100 words or less, tell us why you should be appointed to the Saratoga youth Commission?
Some people choose to lead, and others choose to follow. I yearn to be a leader. Thriving
leadership is an essential part of every Saratoga Youth Commission memeber. Leadership is
composed of various qualities including projection of ideals, empathy, communication, and being
courteous towards others. I desire to be associated in a group that stresses leadership through the
involvement of community service. I undoubtedly believe I possess such traits and crave to apply
these traits to help reform Saratoga into an exceptional home. If I do get appointed, I promise to

I think I would be a good addition to the Saratoga Youth Commision becuase I love Saratoga.
When I first moved to Saratoga in 6th grade I felt the charm that the city has when you walk through
downtown or when you visit the Saratoga Library. There is a large sense of community and unity
that this city also has. It would be an exceptinal opportunity to try and help create that charm for
some of the other people in Saratoga. I think I should also be appointed to the Saratoga Youth

During Freshman orientation, I met three amazing link-leaders. They helped me find the leader I
was meant to be before the competition began, by influencing the way I saw others.Their honesty
gave me hope that some people out there were just NICE, and inspired me to leave a similar
impact on my peers. From eighth grade leadership to winning state speech competitions with the

FBLA and INTERACT. I will also continue on with my favorite
sports, volleyball and lacrosse. I am planning on also continuing
my path with the drama department, in their fall play and spring
musical. Another one of my passions include Speech and
Debate and dancing with the company MKC. Hopefully, I will
also be able to commit to Girl scouts and guitar classes. I believe
that although I have so many different extracurricular activities,
they have each shaped me as an individual by making me well-
rounded. I love them all so much, and that's exactly why I am a
part of each of them.

1. I have lived in Saratoga for the majority of my life, and I find myself frustrated by the
lack of youth oriented opportunities, but excited about the possibilities. With my two
years left before I leave for college, I want to make a difference for the upcoming youth.
Currently, the youth population feels that Saratoga doesn't give them enough activities to
be involved in the city. They would rather spend their time confined in their own homes
or go to neighboring cities. I really would like to change this to make Saratoga more of an
appealing place and give youth a sense of belonging.
2. During the 2014-15 year, I will continue participating in sports, school clubs, and cultural
activities. I will be participating in the school's girl's soccer team. Additionally, I will be
a part of the school's speech and debate team, where I will deliver original speeches.
Outside of school, I will keep learning Indian classical dance and use this to contribute to
the Indian Cultural Awareness Club at my school. Finally, I will maintain my job of
tutoring underclassmen in math and other subjects as needed.

1. In 100 words or less, tell us why you should be appointed to the Saratoga Youth Commission?
Saratoga Youth Commission is a body of students that serves to further the city's role in the
community and to provide a safe, prosperous environment for students from all grade levels. I
believe my experience in diverse activities will serve to address the concerns of students who may
not be represented by the members of the Commission. My ties with Speech and Debate, music
department, History Bowl, and the journalism department will allow those associated with these
organizations to have a representative to share their ideas and problems. Aside from my
connections, I have a passion to work hard and to gain success through dedication and
perseverance. My belief is that anything can be achieved with a proper approach and with optimism.
2. Besides school, what other activities(e.g. sports, theater, church, etc.) will you be involved in during the
2014-15 school year?
In 2014-15 school year, my most time consuming activities will be Marching Band and Speech and
Debate. I will be going to church on Sundays as well. Activities like history bowl and Soundings are
up to try-out and recommendations, so my schedule is not definitive yet.

1. In 100 wards or less, tell us why you should be appointed to the Saratoga Youth Commission?
I think I would be a good addition to the Commission because I have completed Redwood Middle
School and will be finishing high school during the 2014-2015 school year. I believe those 7 years
of experience in the educational facilities of Saratoga has given me insight into the strengths and
weaknesses of our schools, and have given me ideas possible changes that could be made to the
schools. Also, I have volunteer experience in both tutoring and coaching (swim coach at Saratoga
YMCA, volunteer at Organization of Families with Special needs), two skills that I believe can help
me organize meetings for Saratoga youth to come and learn about volunteering opportunities in the
city.
2. Besides school, what other activities(e.g.sports, theater, church, etc.)will you be involved in during the
2014-15schoolyear?
I will be a part of both the high school and club swim team (De Anza Cupertino Aquatics swim club),
and I will be swimming year round. I will be volunteering at either the SW YMCA and/or the Good
Samaritan hospital on the weekends.
