A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA
URGING SARATOGA RESIDENTS TO CONSERVE WATER
WHEREAS, California is currently experiencing one of the worst droughts in the State's
history, with approximately 58 percent of the state experiencing exceptional drought conditions
and reservoir far below normal levels; and
WHEREAS, in January 2014, Governor Jerry Brown declared a State of Emergency and
urged residents to reduce water consumption by 20 percent; and
WHEREAS,the Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors adopted a
resolution in February 2014 recommending retail water agencies implement mandatory measures
needed to achieve a water use reduction target equal to 20 percent of 2013 water use through
December 31, 2014; and
WHEREAS,residents play a key role in water conservation and can influence make a
big impact through small changes; and
WHEREAS,the State Water Board approved regulations in July 2014 on outdoor urban
water use, banning Californians from hosing off driveways and sidewalks, causing excess runoff
when watering landscaping, using a hose without a shut-off nozzle to wash vehicles, and using
potable water in fountains or water features unless the water is circulated; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the State Water Board's regulations, residents can save water
by taking advantage of Santa Clara Valley Water District rebates and services, such as rebates
for high-efficiency toilets, landscape conversion rebates, and water-wise house calls that help
residents identify water conservation opportunities; and
WHEREAS, maintenance of lawns require considerable amounts of water and even a
small lawn may require more than 18,000 gallons of water per year; and
WHEREAS,residents can reduce water use by participating in the Santa Clara Valley
Water District's "Brown is the New Green" campaign by watering lawns less and letting them go
a little brown during the summer;
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Saratoga does
hereby recognize the exceptional drought conditions in the State of California and urges Saratoga
residents to proactively seek out opportunities to conserve water.
The above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Saratoga
City Council held on the 20th day of August 2014 by the following vote:
