b. 14630 Big Basin Way - John Henry House (1869) - The owner (Mr. Hernandez)
provided an overview of the proposal including the potential to retain the existing well on
the site, if feasible, and use it for irrigation. Mr. Hernandez indicated that they would
allow another person or group to move the John Henry House at their own expense. John
Cherbone is getting a quote from Kelly Movers to relocate the structure. Mr. Hernandez
indicated that the garage foundation is cracked and settled and that the mover(s) would
need to remove or encapsulate any mold, lead, and/or asbestos due to safety concerns. Mr.
Hernandez indicated that the exterior walls could be folded down prior to moving and that
the relocated structure would require a new foundation. The HPC discussed the possibility
of saving parts of the structure, including the wood boards. The HPC also discussed the
idea of inventorying the structure and replicating it with new materials, which could
potentially be the most affordable option. Another option was to store the structure until
money was available to restore it. Ideas for raising the necessary funds included setting up
a foundation. Mr. Hernandez suggested the Quarry Park could be a potential site. Other
sites discussed by the HPC included the Orchard Park and the front lawn of City Hall.
Shah/Nugent/Conrado moved to request the City Council consider options for moving and
reconstructing the John Henry House. Motion Passed. Ayes: Cappello, Conrado, Marra,
Nugent, Schuck, Shah. Noes: None.Absent: Marchetti.Abstain: None
c. 20399 Park Place — Pergola/trellis reconstruction at Saratoga Foothill Club — The
applicant provided an overview of the proposal. The current trellis is constructed of
several different types of redwood including vertical grain redwood on the trellis skirts.
The applicant will retain as much of the existing redwood as feasible. The parts that are
deteriorated will be reconstructed with cedar as opposed to redwood for cost savings and
longevity. The existing trellis will be inventoried using a photo journal, disassembled
piece by piece, and then rebuilt to its original configuration and dimensionally correct.
The builder will use an internal post and beam construction to hold the structure together.
Cooper caps (painted to match the wood) will be used to preserve the top of the trellis.
The wood will be painted to match the original trellis. The trellis will be rebuilt to
maintain the structure's national registration status. Shah/Marra moved to approve the
project. Motion Passed. Ayes: Cappello, Conrado, Marra, Nugent, Schuck, Shah. Noes:
None.Absent: Marchetti.Abstain: none
3. Old Business
a. Heritage Trees — The HPC provided edits for the draft letter to future heritage tree
owners. There was also some discussion about several potential trees for inclusion on the
Heritage Tree Inventory:
i. HPC Vice Chair Nugent indicated that the owner may be interested in putting the
"Farwell Oak tree" on the inventory.
ii. HPC member Schuck indicated that the "Donna Lane Oak" is a prominent tree in the
front of the property and that there is also an oak grove on the property. The owner is
in poor health.
iii. HPC member Conrado indicated that the owner is interested in putting the
"Ravenwood tree" on the inventory and he will send the letter once it is ready.
iv. HPC member Marra indicated that the two "Hakone Oak"trees are located by the
office and Gardner's house. He would also like to consider an oak tree by the
bathroom, although it has wires running through it. There are also two young
redwood trees by the entrance, a redwood tree near the upper moon viewing hose and
a majestic Oak near the lower house that he would like to consider for heritage tree
status.
v. HPC Chair Cappello is reviewing the Madronia Cemetery tree
vi. HPC member Shah is reviewing the Douglas Oak tree
vii. Tabled: HPC member Marchetti (absent) is reviewing four City trees (Kevin Moran,
Blaney Oak, Blaney Pine, District Office Oak)
