Accept Agenda Items&Order: No additional items may be added to this agenda pursuant to Government Code Section 59454.2. Oral &Written Communications:Any member of the public may address the Commission about any matter not on the agenda for this meeting for up to three minutes. Commissioners may not comment on the matter, but may choose to place the topic on a future agenda. -Trish Cypher presented an updated draft of the Saratoga Citizens' Resource Center proposal Approval of Minutes: Draft minutes for the April 24, 2013 meeting. -Caldron moved and Whitcomb seconded to approve the draft minutes for the April 24, 2013 meeting. Old Business 1. Emerging Trends Issue: Continue ongoing discussion on emerging trends. Action: Discuss trends. - Schlosser stated that libraries should consider adding cafes in their facilities. He stated that cafes add value because patrons can use the cafes even if library is not open. Schlosser asked both Library staff and City staff to find out if there are any restrictions on adding a cafe to the Saratoga Library. 2. Upcoming Events Issue: Continue ongoing discussion on upcoming events. Action: Discuss upcoming events. Staff Liaison Cabute reported the upcoming City events. 3. Library Commission Work Plan- Organizations Issue: The Library Commission had a joint meeting with the City Council on November 7, 2012 and the Commissioners presented their work plan to the Council.The Commission approved their work plan on December 12, 2012. On February 5, 2013, City staff forwarded via email, on behalf of Librarian Kanth, a list of Saratoga groups and organizations. Action: Continue discussion about presentations. - Commissioners had no new activity related to their work plan. New Business 4. Library Commission Vacancies Issue: The Library Commission has two commissioner positions which have terms that will expire on September 30, 2013 and both are eligible to reapply. The City of Saratoga will be accepting applications until 5:00 p.m. on August 27, 2013. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered. Interviews are scheduled to take place the evening of September 4, 2013 in the Administrative Conference Room of the City Manager's Office, which is located at 13777 Fruitvale Avenue in Saratoga. Applicants will be informed of their interview time after the application deadline. Applicants who cannot be present during the interviews are asked to submit a written explanation for the Council's consideration. Action: This item is for information only. - Staff Liaison Cabute gave a brief report about the current openings. Reports 1. Nancy Howe, Santa Clara County Librarian (Derek Wolf presented for Nancy) - Deputy County Librarian Wolf gave a presentation about Measure A. 2. Gayathri Kanth, Community Librarian (Roselyn Donald) - Deputy County Librarian Donald gave summary about the 10 year anniversary event, and notable projects at the library, including Adult Energizer Stations, Adult Reading Program, Kids Reading Program and Little Sweet Potato. Donald announced upcoming events:July 15t"Star Party-San Jose Astronomy, October Sky, and CSI Teen Program and Henna Art. 3. Terrie Creamer, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries - Absent- no report 4. Linda Baxter, Library Commission Chair - Absent- no report 5. Mainini Cabute, City of Saratoga Liaison - Reported upcoming item 2 of Old Business.
