Call to Order 4:12 p.m.
Roll Call
Present: Linda Baxter, Susan Calderon, Lauren Marty
Absent: Jill Whitcomb

Report on Posting of the Agenda: Brian Babcock,Administrative Analyst with the City of Saratoga,
reported that pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2,the agenda for this meeting was properly
posted on February 21, 2014.
Oral &Written Communications:
None
Approval of Minutes: Draft minutes for the December 4, 2013 meeting.
Marty moved to approve the draft minutes for the December 4, 2013 meeting. Baxter seconded the
motion. Motion passed 3-0. Yays: Baxter, Calderon, Marty. Nays: None. Absent: Whitcomb.
Old Business
1. Emerging Trends:
Issue: Continue ongoing discussion on emerging trends. Discussion on adding a cafe to the
Saratoga Library has been added to this item.
Action: Discuss trends.
No discussion.
2. Upcoming Events
Issue: Continue ongoing discussion on upcoming events.
Action: Discuss upcoming events.
Marty said that she would be on the panel for the Teen Advisory Board's March 15th college
panel event. She invited other commissioners to attend.
New Business
3. Update on Commission Representation
Issue: Each Library Commissioner was appointed as a representative to other Saratoga
commissions on December 4, 2013 with the purpose of sharing ideas and looking for
areas of collaboration.
Action: Discuss progress and future possibilities.
Babcock reported that Whitcomb had attended a Heritage Preservation Committee meeting. He
said they discussed a possible coloring book, showing various Saratoga historical homes and
sites, which could be placed in the library. They also discussed using the library Community
Room for lectures.
Calderon said that she's be meeting with the Parks and Recreation Commission in March.
Marty said she had met with the Youth Commission and Teen Advisory Board. She said TAB
should focus on the intent of its purpose at Youth Commission meetings. She said a good
relationship moving forward would create better awareness for the library.
Calderon said she's like to see more artwork from children and teens in the library. She said it
would help engage students who are more creative.
Marty said that coffeehouse events are an attempt to reach out to students who are more
creative.
Guidry said he is the president of the Saratoga Education Foundation. He said he would put the
library in touch with the art teacher from the Saratoga Union School District.
Baxter said she's like to see a student art display in the library's Community Room.
Reports
1. Derek Wolfgram, Santa Clara County Deputy Librarian
Wolgram said that the Santa Clara County Library had been given a five-star rating from the
Library Journal. He said that the library was ranked fourth with a $30 million budget. He said
that about 60 people attended the Friends Commissioners Forum, which was a day full of
networking and learning. He said that in the fall all libraries in the district would receive
upgraded wireless. He passed out information on the California Public Libraries Association's
March workshops and the library brochure. He discussed the tutor program and said that there
are 130 tutor-learner relationships throughout the library district.
2. Allison Parham,Acting Saratoga Community Librarian
Parham passed out the Silicon Valley Reads program and said there were more programs to
come at the Saratoga Library. She talked about the new eBooks webpage and passed out an
informational brochure about it. She discussed some personnel changes, library programs and
outreach. She showed a video about the Mango Languages program and said it could be found
on the library's website.
3. Terrie Creamer, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries
Absent.
4. Jill Whitcomb, Library Commission Chair
Absent.
5. Brian Babcock, City of Saratoga Liaison
Babcock discussed upcoming events.

- Hi�hway 9 Safety Improvement Proiect Ribbon Cutting, Thursday, December 19th at
3:30 p.m. on Highway 9 near Three Oaks Way
- Recreation Department Open House, Saturday, March 29th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at
the Joan Pisani Community Center, 19655 Allendale Avenue
Calderon moved to add an agenda item to discuss the Library Commission's meeting schedule.
Marty seconded the motion. Motion passed 3-0. Yays: Baxter, Calderon, Marty. Nays: None.
Absent: Whitcomb.

Baxter moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:11 p.m. Marty seconded the motion. Motion passed 3-0.
