Report on Posting of the Agenda: Brian Babcock,Administrative Analyst with the City of Saratoga,
reported that pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2,the agenda for this meeting was properly
posted on June 19, 2014.

Approval of Minutes: Draft minutes for the May 29, 2014 meeting.
Calderon moved to approve the draft minutes for the May 29, 2014 meeting. Baxter seconded the
motion. Motion passed 4-0. Yays: Baxter, Calderon, Marty, Whitcomb. Nays: None. Absent: Gulino.
New Business
1. Emerging Trends
Issue: Continue ongoing discussion on emerging trends.
Action: Discuss trends.
No discussion.
2. Upcoming Events
Issue: Continue ongoing discussion on upcoming events.
Action: Discuss upcoming events.
No discussion.
3. Update on Saratoga Movie Nights
Issue: Commissioners asked that this item be placed on the agenda.
Action: Discuss item.
Marty said she went to the June Movie Night event at EI Quito Park. She said there was plenty of
food to offer the crowd. She said it would be good for Library Commissioners and Library Staff to
attend the two remaining events. She said it would be a good way of educating the community
about the Library and Commission.
Robert Gulino attended the meeting at 4:08 p.m.
4. Update on 2014 Work Plan
Issue: Library Commissioners created a 2014 Work Plan, which was presented to the Saratoga
City Council during a joint study session in December 2013.
Action: Discuss progress.
Baxter said she would be out of the country and would not be able to meet with the
Commission she has been assigned to.
Whitcomb asked if there had been any movement on contacting local organizations and leaders
as part of the Library Commissions 2014 Work Plan. Commissioners replied that they had not.
Whitcomb asked that the item remain on the Commission's future agendas.
Reports
1. Nancy Howe, Santa Clara County Librarian
Howe said that the Santa Clara County Library District had its 2014/15 budget approved. She
said that there have been slight revisions to the Library District's behavior policing, which dealt
with e-cigarettes, skateboarding, noise, and someone not wearing shoes. She said that the Joint
Powers Authority would review the $80 non-resident library card fee. She said Saratoga was
impacted, as were many other County Libraries. She said the State has added $5 million to its
budget to help fund libraries. She said the County Library received a public relations award.
Howe said that the Library would be hosting a 100-year anniversary party at Hakone Gardens on
October 3, which will also be a fundraiser for the bookmobile program.
2. Allison Parham,Acting Saratoga Community Librarian
Parham said that as the end of June there were 210 adults, 181 teens, and 747 children who had
signed up for the 2014 Summer Reading program. She thanked the Commission for its help with
marketing the program.
Calderon said that the local YMCA had laminated the Summer Reading Program flyers and put
them out for the public to view. She said she had signed up for the Reading Program and
received a free book.
Parham gave the April and May 2013 versus 2014 circulation numbers and said that eBook
circulation is soaring.
Howe said that the way people are receiving certain types of information is changing. She said
that people are not checking out as much nonfiction as they used to, adding that people are
turning to the internet for information on topics like home improvements.
Parham said that the Saratoga Library hired new Supervising Librarian of Teen and Adult
Services Annapurna Dandu. She discussed previous and upcoming programs. She said that the
Saratoga Library had created a Relay for Life team and asked Commissioners if they wanted to
participate. Parham said that the Saratoga Library would be host to the Santa Clara County
Library District's attempt to break the world record for the most people balancing a book on
their heads while walking approximately 17 feet. She said that the Saratoga Library would also
host an event on October 11 to celebrate the Library District's 100-year anniversary.
3. Terrie Creamer, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries
Creamer reported that the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries had donated approximately
$144,000 to the Saratoga Library this year. Creamer discussed the Friends' efforts to attract new
membership. She said "bestseller' sales have been declining because people are buying less
hardback books. She said that in the past people would donate their new books to the Book-Go-
Round just weeks after their releases.
4. Jill Whitcomb, Library Commission Chair
No report.
5. Brian Babcock, City of Saratoga Liaison
Babcock said that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics had released a report about the reading
habits of Americans.
Adjournment
Calderon moved to adjourn the meeting at 5:18 p.m. Baxter seconded the motion. Motion passed 5-0.
