HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-27-2014 Library Commission Meeting Minutes y o4 SARqT City of Sa ratoga C��� �Gy library Commission ,9�6 MINUTES �'�ClFORN�� DATE: August 27, 2014 TIME: 4:00 p.m. LOCATION: Saratoga Library/Community Room 13650 Saratoga Avenue Saratoga, CA 95070 Call to Order 4:10 p.m. Roll Call Present: Robert Gulino,Jill Whitcomb Absent: Linda Baxter, Susan Calderon, Lauren Marty Staff: Terrie Creamer, Derek Wolfgram,Allison Lew, Brian Babcock Public: Trish Cypher, Stephen Kispersky Report on Posting of the Agenda: Brian Babcock,Administrative Analyst with the City of Saratoga, reported that pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2,the agenda for this meeting was properly posted on August 22, 2014. Oral &Written Communications: Oral Communication from Trish Cypher: Cypher passed out a screen shot of the Santa Clara County Library District's "Terms of Use" from the District's website. Cypher said she took issue with some of the language of the District's "Terms of Use." Wolfgram said that he would speak Cypher about her concerns after the meeting. Approval of Minutes: Draft minutes for the May 29, 2014 meeting. Due to the lack of a quorum, no action was taken on this item. Old Business 1. Emerging Trends Issue: Continue ongoing discussion on emerging trends. Action: Discuss trends. 2. Upcoming Events Issue: Continue ongoing discussion on upcoming events. Action: Discuss upcoming events. 3. Update on 2014 Work Plan Issue: Library Commissioners created a 2014 Work Plan, which was presented to the Saratoga City Council during a joint study session in December 2013. Action: Discuss progress. New Business 4. Joint Session with the Saratoga City Council Issue: The Saratoga Library Commission, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries, and staff from the Santa Clara County Library District and Saratoga Library will meet with the Saratoga City Council for their annual joint meeting on October 15, 2014. Action: Discuss possible agenda topics. Due to the lack of a quorum, no action was taken on any of the above items. Reports 1. Derek Wolfgram, Deputy Santa Clara County Librarian Wolfgram said that the Library District was moving forward to break the world record for most people balancing a book on their heads at one time. Wolfgram said the current record to beat was 1,000 and was hoping to attract 1,200 to the Saratoga Library event. Wolgram said that the District had partnered with JukePop, an online self-publishing platform, which gives authors feedback on analytics of every chapter they write and publish. Wolfgram said the District had dropped the use of Mango and replaced it with language software Pronunciator. Wolgram also announced a partnership with Universal Class, which allows for interaction with a live instructor and self-guided study. Wolfgram also said the District is offering its cardholders Press Display, which is an online platform that has full texts to newspapers and magazines. 2. Allison Lew, Acting Saratoga Community Librarian Lew gave the statistics of June and July 2013 versus the June and July 2014. Lew went through the many programs the Saratoga Library has, and will be, offering its cardholders. Lew said that the Saratoga Library has done a lot of recent outreach, including tabling at the monthly Farmers Market at West Valley College, Saratoga Movie Nights series, and a picnic in Monte Sereno on September 27, 2014. Lew said that the Saratoga Library would receive a proclamation from the Saratoga City Council as part of National Library Card Sign-Up Month. Lew said that the Saratoga Library would be hosting a celebration for the 100-year anniversary of the Library District. Lew gave the total participation of the Summer Reading Program as of August 19: 987 children, 232 teens, and 284 adults for a total of 1,503. 3. Terrie Creamer, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries Creamer said that September would kick-off the new fiscal year of the Authors Series. Creamer said the series would be held on the first Wednesday of every month except during the summer. 4. Jill Whitcomb, Library Commission Chair No report. 5. Brian Babcock, City of Saratoga Liaison Babcock said that the Library Commission would be having a joint session with the City Council on Wednesday, October 15. Babcock also mentioned upcoming events, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and Brews and Blues.
