A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SARATOGA
URGING SARATOGA RESIDENTS TO CONSERVE WATER
WHEREAS, in response to current drought conditions, the Saratoga City Council adopted
Resolution No. 14-052 urging residents to reduce water usage by 20 percent; and
WHEREAS, California's drought conditions have persisted and, on April 1, 2015, Governor
Jerry Brown ordered mandatory water reductions and called on the State Water Resources Board to
impose restrictions on urban water suppliers to achieve statewide reductions in water use through
February 2016; and
WHEREAS, both San Jose Water Company and the Santa Clara Valley Water District Board
of Directors are calling for a 30 percent reduction in residential water use; and
WHEREAS, local reservoirs are roughly half full, groundwater levels are 30 to 40 feet lower
than average, and the Sierra snowpack is roughly 10 percent of normal; and
WHEREAS, Santa Clara County depends heavily on groundwater basins and as water levels
in the groundwater basins decreases, the risk of subsidence increases; and
WHEREAS, subsidence causes sinking, which can cause significant damage to canals,
levees, roadways, sewer or storm water systems, and can also lead to flooding or allow salt water to
enter aquifers; and
WHEREAS, residents play a key role in water conservation and can save water by taking
advantage of Santa Clara Valley Water District rebates and services, such as rebates for high -
efficiency toilets, landscape conversion rebates, and water -wise house calls that help residents
identify water conservation opportunities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Saratoga does
hereby urge Saratoga residents to be proactively seek out opportunities to conserve water by 30
percent.
The above and foregoing resolution was passed and adopted at a regular meeting of the Saratoga City
Council held on the 20th day of May 2015 by the following vote:
