City of Saratoga Memorandum To: Park and Trail Use Subcommittee From: Crystal Morrow, Administrative Analyst II City of Saratoga Date: December 17, 2008 Park and Trail Use Subcommittee Meeting Subject: No Cost/Low Cost Strategies for Increasing Use of Saratoga Parks and Trails During the November 2008 Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC) and Pedestrian, Equestrian, and Bicycle Trails Committee (PEBTAC) joint meeting, the Park and Trail Use Subcommittee was established to explore no cost/low cost options for encouraging use of the City’s parks and trails. The two groups agreed the Subcommittee would be comprised of two PRC members and two PEBTAC members. It was also decided that two representatives from the Youth Commission would be invited to participate in the Subcommittee. During the joint meeting, the PEBTAC and PRC discussed several ideas for minimal cost events that would educate residents about Saratoga’s parks and trails while encouraging greater use of the parks and trails. Some of the ideas mentioned during the meeting included: - Scavenger hunt in one City park or several parks throughout the City - Open house of the City’s parks, where residents could learn about the features of the park being showcased - Picnics in the City’s parks - Photo contest of City parks in which residents submit a photo and brief essay on their favorite Saratoga park In addition to these options for encouraging park and trail use, the PRC has previously discussed the following possibilities: - Park Watch Program where residents volunteer to monitor neighborhood parks and help keep parks safe for children to use - Working with local music groups, including Saratoga’s Community Band, to hold musical performances in parks - Working with Saratoga High School students and KSAR to create a television series on working out in Saratoga’s parks The Parks and Trail Use Subcommittee is expected to report back to the PRC on January 13, 2009 during the Commission’s regular meeting.
