HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-09-2015 Library Commission Meeting Minutes City of Saratoga Library Commission Minutes DATE: Wednesday, December 9, 2015 TIME: 4:00 p.m. LOCATION: Saratoga Library/ Community Room 13650 Saratoga Avenue Saratoga, CA 95070 Call to Order 5:13 p.m. Roll Call – Marty (Late), Gulino, Campodonico Also present: Nancy Howe (County Librarian) , Allison Lew (Community Librarian), Lisa Finley (FSL); Community members: Amika Antoniades-Rao, Subha Rajana, Flora Hoffman Report on Posting of the Agenda: Pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2, the agenda for this meeting was properly posted on December 2, 2015. Oral & Written Communications: None. Approval of Minutes: Campodonico moved to approve the draft minutes for the October 28 meeting. Vice-chair Gulino seconded the motion. Motion passed 2-0. Old Business 1. Saratoga Heritage Inventory List Issue: Saratoga Library to be added to the City’s HPC’s “Saratoga’s Heritage Inventory List.” Issue is not ready to be addressed per City Council. Action: City Staff contacted HPC Staff Liaison and Associate Planner Michael Fossati and he has informed me that the Inventory List is still in process and is not ready to be discussed. None taken and will be taken off the agenda per Vice-Chair Gulino. 2. Library Trivia Night Issue: Library Commission, with assistance from Library staff, will be planning a trivia night for adults Action: Begin plan the logistics and marketing strategy for the event, which is expected to take place in March. Library staff informed commission that the following dates are available to hold event: April 8, April 21, June 4. Since spring break would conflict with 4/8 and 6/4 is summer, Vice Chair Gulino felt 4/21 was the only option. Event will be held at 3:00 p.m. (no longer has “night” in name); Commission needs to plan event logistics and marketing strategy. Vice Chair Gulino motioned to have a special meeting on Tuesday, January 26 at 7:00 p.m. (held in a study room). Chair Marty seconded the motion. Motion passed 3-0. 3. Library Card for Every Resident Issue: Assist Library staff efforts to promote obtaining a library card. Action: Feedback from tabling at annual Tree Lighting event in the Downtown Village. Chair Marty reported that the Tree Lighting event offered an opportunity to promote the Library. She handed out goody bags and answered questions about senior programming and a children’s reading program. Reports 1. Nancy Howe, Santa Clara County Librarian: a. Discussed “Welcome” to the library brochure, which is printed in four languages— English, Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese; b. Announced the library’s holidays hours c. Informed commission about article in San Jose Mercury News about the librarians who were interviewed about the best children’s books d. There’s an exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution at the Milpitas Library e. Discussed the economic and logistical impact of the elimination of the nonresident fee; Milpitas and Cupertino have been the most affected; Saratoga’s impact has been in the “middle range.” 2. Allison Lew, Saratoga Community Librarian a. Informed commission about two upcoming programs: recycle program at the Library (12/15) and teen program for how to deal with stress (1/23) b. Reviewed the previous night’s celebration of the volunteers and donors from the Friends of the Saratoga Library; shared a slideshow 3. Lisa Finley, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries a. Thanked the City of Saratoga for the new flooring installed at the Book Go Around b. Actively seeking volunteers c. Announced 2016 Paperback sales schedule d. Changed email contact system to Mailchimp e. Now selling books on Amazon 4. Lauren Marty, Library Commission Chair (none) 5. Adam Henig, City of Saratoga Liaison a. Announced City Council will hold study session on December 16, 2015, to discuss the future of the Library Commission. Agenda Items for the Next Meeting, February 24, 2016 – Update from Special Meeting Adjournment Campodonico motioned to adjourned at 6:04 p.m. Vice Chair Gulino seconded the motion. Motion passed 3-0.
