HomeMy WebLinkAbout3.12.13 Youth Commission Minutes City of Saratoga Youth Commission Minutes DATE: Tuesday, March 12, 2013 TIME: 7:00 p.m. LOCATION: Warner Hutton House 13777 Fruitvale Ave. Saratoga, CA 95070 Call to Order 7:03 Roll Call: Agrawal, Chang (late 7:04), Chien, Finch, Lee, Khare (left 8:21), Pandya, Smith (late 7:06), Sreedhara, Tang, Vijay (absent). Report on Posting of the Agenda: Pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2, this meeting was properly posted on March 5, 2013. Accept Agenda Items: No additional items may be added pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2. Approval of February Minutes Oral & Written Communication: Any member of the public may address the Commission about any matter not on the agenda for this meeting for up to three minutes. Commissioners may not comment on the matter, but may choose to place the topic on a future agenda. NEW BUSINESS I. SYC application due May 14, 2013 a. Recruit potential applicants 1. Try to recruit students from school that aren’t represented (ie. Prospect, Monta Vista, etc.) II. Pizza & Politics Award (photo-op) a. Award of Excellence by California Parks and Recreation Society b. Thank you card from Cupertino Teen Commission III. Multimedia via KSAR a. Start next year – could move to library room to hold meetings since easier to film b. Start filming at training and keep up throughout the year – more interesting to youth on Facebook c. Good promotion for our events/non-meetings d. Talk to people who may be interested to film IV. Movie Night 1 a. Partner with Parks and Recreation Commission: The group also recommended working with the Saratoga Youth Commission to recommend the movies to show and to pass out popcorn to movie attendees, according to a staff report. b. Selection of movies 1. Live action & animated films c. Dates – June 21, July 19 and August 16 @ Wildwood Park 1. Mark dates on calendars OLD BUSINESS V. Saratoga Radio (1610 AM) a. New voices? 1. As the year goes on, we’ll have more events to talk about 2. Update on TFBA winner 3. Thursday 3:30 PM, come with a script b. Working with Redwood Middle School (Nihar) 1. Multimedia Teacher, Mr. Steffen – 3/21 4 PM 2. Recruit middle school students to do radio announcements VI. Teen Friendly Business Award 1. Update –La Cueva is the winner 2. When should the discount be offered? (Sierra) i. 3 PM – 7 PM, allow all students to eat ii. Make sign to advertise the discount iii. Let La Cueva decide who is a Youth iv. Promote the award and discount – put in announcement, radio, Facebook, SHS TV, flyers – Sarah 3. TFBA given by Mayor – March 18th (tentative) i. Change date to 3/22 4 PM ii. 2nd date: 3/18, 4 PM 4. News article for Saratoga News? i. Sarah & Somya – promote event & actual ceremony VII. WOW – Walk One Week 2013 a. Schedule 1. Punch card announcements on back 2. Parent signature on back 1. JW House – plan for larger group), more volunteering • Plan event in first half of year, plan out events in first meeting • Finding more opportunities to build connections • More events geared for teens & middle school students • Collaboration with other commissions & the youth & the city council • Keep it broad community based?
