HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-09-2016 Youth Commission Minutes City of Saratoga Youth Commission MINUTES DATE: Tuesday, February 9, 2016 TIME: 7:00 p.m. LOCATION: Warner Hutton House 13777 Fru itvale Avenue Saratoga, CA 95070 Call to Order 7:00pm Roll Call: Eem (absent), Debling, Kaliyur, Medhekar, Maheshwari, Pradhan, Shanbhag, Singh, Verma, Vijay, Weisend. Report on Posting of the Agenda: Pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2, this meeting was properly posted on January 27th, 2016. Accept Agenda Items : No additional items may be added pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2. Approval of January 26th minutes (Maheshwari, Debling) Oral & Written Communication: Any member of the public may address the Commission about any matter not on the agenda for this meeting for up three minutes. Commissioners may not comment on the matter, but may choose to place the topic on a future agenda. I. State of the City with Manny Cappello a) Saturday, February 27th i Take place in the theatre ii Youth commission to open and close the event 1 Seat and introduce dignitaries iii Before Friday 2/12: write name, what it means to be on commission, and what we have accomplished/hope to accomplish II. CIP Project Proposals with Manny Cappello a) All-inclusive play structure update i FUNDED – $160,000 1 Azul and quarry park options for now, but hopefully all later on b) Teen Center i Unable to fund the teen center ii Keep working on it to reconsider it 1 Identify a facility for next year – look into the empty building in downtown III. Recap on Kirk Heinrichs presentation a) What would make downtown a more inviting place to hang out? i Vijay – create flyer IV. Recap February 5th Parents’ Night Out i Very successful – many repeat kids ii Must advertise it more 1 Advertise to the parents? – post flyers at businesses, advertise as they leave from the event, put the flyer in the activity guide, post it at church and the library iii Can make setting up activities more efficient (moving of the mats) 1 Assign jobs to the youth commissioners 2 make an agenda for the night iv Quieting them down more efficiently V. Movie Night a) Saturday, February 20th i. Market it –Facebook campaign (profile picture) b) 5:00pm-11:00pm c) Joan Pisani Community Center- Multipurpose Room d) Movie Selection i. Inside Out VI. Lunar New Year Celebration a) Sunday, February 28th (Verma, Pradhan(maybe) unable to attend) i. Shift 1 (10:30 - 1) – Kaliyur, Debling, Shanbhag, Maheshwari, Singh, Vijay ii. Shift 2 (1 –3:30) – Weisend, Medhekar, Shanbhag, Debling, Kaliyur, Vijay, Singh b) 11:00am-3:00pm c) Hakone Garden d) Face painting & Tattoos i. ST PADDYS DAY BALLOON ANIMALS VII. Parents’ Night Out a) Friday, March 4 i. Unable to attend: Vijay, Pradhan ii. Lego themed – hand out flyers b) Friday, May 27th VIII. YAC Attack a) March 5th i. Unable to attend: Pradhan, Vijay b) 8:30am-4:00pm c) Red Morton Community Center- Redwood City d) Prepare for topic debate i. Gun control, search and seizure 1 Verma – powerpoint 2 Maheshwari, Kaliyur, Singh introduce the topics ii. Split them up by type of candy iii. Proposed schedule 1 5 minutes for intro topic (and ourselves) 2 5 minutes prep time 3 20 minutes back and forth a Repeat for next topic or give them option to continue e) Mayor Manny Cappello for session presentation? – confirmed! i. “What I wish I knew” IX. Middle School Dances a) March 11th i. Glow in the Dark 1 Handout wristbands with id numbers as tickets - $5 presale, $7 at the door a Create promo video 2 Sell at Redwood – try to sell at Miller and Kennedy a Take down names 3 Decorations PUSH TO NEXT MEETING a Glow in the dark spraypaint, balloon arch with glowsticks inside i Borrow blacklights, electric balloon fillers 4 Hire djs 5 Food – cupcakes from whole foods, chips, soda (everything we sell is a dollar) b) May 13th X. Blossom Festival a) Saturday, March 19th b) 10:00am-4:00pm c) Heritage Orchard d) Participation Requested XI. Color Run a) Sunday, April 17th b) Congress Springs/Joe’s Trail c) Components of run i. 5K booths along the way (selfie station, photo booth, water station, lemonade station, etc.) ii.
