Youth Commission
MINUTES
DATE: Tuesday, February 23, 2016

Call to Order 7:02pm
Roll Call: Eem, Debling, Kaliyur, Medhekar, Maheshwari, Pradhan, Shanbhag, Singh, Verma, Vijay,
Weisend.
Report on Posting of the Agenda: Pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2, this meeting was
properly posted on February 22, 2016.
Accept Agenda Items : No additional items may be added pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2.
Approval of February 9th minutes (Verma, Maheshwari)
Oral & Written Communication: Any member of the public may address the Commission about any matter
not on the agenda for this meeting for up three minutes. Commissioners may not comment on the
matter, but may choose to place the topic on a future agenda.
I. Recap on Movie Night
a) Miscommunication over food
b) Turnout was great! – placed flyers in local businesses
c) More marketing
a. Find out different ways to connect with the audiences we don’t have access to
1 School announcements, flyers at schools, school assemblies
b. Use the app Next Door
c. Make a Facebook event for it
d) Plan it further in advance
a. focus on different target audiences with different movies
e) Handout survey – where did you hear about this event from?
f) Have shifts for different roles
II. Marketing
a) Possibly set up monthly meetings with principals to keep in contact about events
a. To set up assemblies, announcements, flyers, etc.
III. State of the City with Manny Cappello
a) Saturday, February 27th
a. Maheshwari must leave early
b) 2:00-5:00pm
c) Dress professionally
a. Dress shirt, khakis, dresses, etc.
IV. Lunar New Year Celebration
a) Sunday, February 28th
a. Eem, Verma unable to attend
b) 11:00am-3:00pm
c) Hakone Garden
d) Face painting
V. Parents’ Night Out
a) Friday, March 4th
a. Entry activities (Greetings, crafts, sports)
b. Lego building contest
c. Decorations – cut out legos on paper
d. Mix the kids up during dinner – set table places
1 Use different tactics during dinner to get them to interact
e. Market to the parents
b) Friday, May 27th
VI. YAC Attack
a) Details
a. March 5th – Weisend unable to make it
b. 8:30am-4:00pm
c. Red Morton Community Center- Redwood City
b) Prepare for debate
a. Gun control, search and seizure
1 Verma – powerpoint
2 Maheshwari, Kaliyur, Singh introduce the topics
b. Split them up by type of candy
c. Proposed schedule
1 5 minutes for intro topic (and ourselves)
2 5 minutes prep time
3 20 minutes back and forth
a Repeat for next topic or give them option to continue

VII. Middle School Dances
a) March 11th – doors open 6:30 (have from 2pm to set up)
a. Can play video at miller if video is a minute long
b. Handout flyers at school, put flyers in newsletter
c. Handout wristbands with id numbers as tickets - $5 presale, $7 at the door

VIII. St. Paddy’s Day Parade
a) Saturday, March 12th
a. Singh, Vijay have to leave early

d) Face painting, tattoos, and nail polish

b) 10:00am-4:00pm

X. Color Run
a) Sunday, April 17th
b) Congress Springs/Joe’s Trail
a. Find organic powder that is animal friendly
1 Check with Weisend about powder at next meeting
b. Give one dixie cup complimentary with registration
c. Selling extra color (All except Verma)
d. Bring a few first aid kits
e. Have volunteers to throw color – maybe other commissions
1 Contact at YAC attack
c) Components of run
i 5K booths along the way (selfie station, photo booth, water station, lemonade
station, etc.)
ii Bring in local food businesses – as weather permits
i. Food trucks – contact by next meeting (must have Saratoga business
license)
ii. Sell their food afterwards
d) Food party afterwards
XI. Santa Clara County Water District Stewardship Commission Update- Malika Singh –
will report in opening announcements if needed
