Saratoga Library Commission
Regular Meeting
December 13, 2016
Call to Order: Chair Claire Campodonico called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
Roll Call
Present: Chair Claire Campodonico, Vice Chair Karen Burley, Commissioner Carol
Barmeier, Flora Hoffman, Anandi Krishnamurthy
Absent: None
Also Present: Nancy Howe, Rose Khoury, Lisa Finley, Terrie Creamer, Crystal Bothelio

Approval of Minutes: Draft minutes for the October 25, 2016 Regular Meeting
CAMPODONICO/BURLEY MOVED TO APPROVE THE DRAFT MINUTES FOR THE
OCTOBER 25, 2016 REGULAR MEETING. MOTION PASSED. AYES: CAMPODONICO,
BURLEY, BARMEIER, HOFFMAN, KRISHNAMURTHY. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE.
ABSENT: NONE.
Agenda Items
1. Library Commission 2017 Work Plan
Summary: Once a year, the Commission presents its proposed work plan to the City
Council for consideration and approval.
Action: Review the work plan and provide updates as needed.
HOFFMAN/KRISHNAMURTHY MOVED TO MAKE THE FOLLOWING UPDATES
TO THE LIBRARY COMMISSION WORK PLAN:
AMEND KEY POINT 2 TO, CONSIDER DATA OF COUNTYWIDE SURVEY
RELATING TO SARATOGA LIBRARY AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS;
ADD KEY POINT 6, HELP INCREASE THE NUMBER OF RESIDENTS WITH
LIBRARY CARDS;
AMEND POINT B UNDER INFORMATION SHARING WITH THE LIBRARY
TO, SUPPORT AND PROMOTE TRIVIA NIGHT EVENTS;
AMEND POINT B UNDER INFORMATION SHARING WITH THE LIBRARY
TO, PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS TO LIBRARY STAFF AT MEETINGS.
THIS WOULD INCLUDE UPCOMING EVENTS TO PROMOTE THE
LIBRARY, NEW TRENDS, AND INTERESTS, ETC.;
STRIKE POINT D UNDER INFORMATION SHARING WITH THE LIBRARY,
POINTS A, B, AND E UNDER INFORMATION SHARING WITH THE
PUBLIC;

AMEND POINT A UNDER SURVEY TO, ANALYZE SURVEY RESULT DATA
FOR SARATOGA LIBRARY AND PROVIDE RECOMMENDATION TO THE
LIBRARY DISTRICT AS APPROPRIATE;
AMEND POINT A UNDER INTERIOR SPACE BUDGET TO, PROVIDE
RECOMMENDATIONS BASED ON SURVEY RESULTS REGARDING THE
$200,000 INTERIOR SPACE BUDGET (I.E., WHAT’S A GREAT FIT FOR THE
COMMUNITY?);
ADD NEW TOPIC IN DETAIL, LIBRARY CARD MEMBERSHIP WITH THE
FOLLOWING POINTS:
a. RECOMMEND OPPORTUNITIES TO REACH THE TARGET TO ISSUE
LIBRARY CARDS TO AT LEAST 85% SARATOGA AND MONTE
SERENO’S POPULATION
MOTION PASSED. AYES: CAMPODONICO, BURLEY, BARMEIER, HOFFMAN,
KRISHNAMURTHY. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: NONE.
2. Library District Survey Results
Summary: The Santa Clara County Library District conducted a district-wide survey.
Action: Receive survey results.
County Librarian Nancy Howe presented the results of the Library District survey. She
discussed some of the changes that are planned as a result of the survey.
Vice Chair recommended making events more prominent on the Saratoga Library page.
Commission Hoffman requested a future agenda item to review the survey data specific
to Saratoga Library.
Commissioner Barmeier agreed that Saratoga specific information would be helpful,
especially if the Commission is planning to make a recommendation on interior space
recommendations and use of the $200,000 interior space funds.
3. Introduction of Santa Clara County Library District Foundation
Summary: The mission of the Santa Clara County Library District Foundation is to raise
funds to support the Santa Clara County Library District which serves the communities
of Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Milpitas, Monte Sereno,
Morgan Hill, Saratoga and the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County. Funding
supports district-wide services such as bookmobile services, the Reading Program,
innovation, and works to extend services to underserved areas.
Action: Receive introduction to the Santa Clara County Library District Foundation.
Terrier Creamer provided an introduction to the Santa Clara County Library District
Foundation to the Commission. She provided information about some of the
Foundation’s objectives and goals.
4. Community News & Trends
Summary: Share news and trends within the community.

Commissioner Barmeier suggested tabling at the Blossom Festival on March 19.
Lisa Finley noted that the Friends typically sell children’s books outside of the Warner
Hutton House as part of the Blossom Festival and the books sell very well.
County Librarian Nancy Howe welcomed recommendations for tabling and use of the
bookmobile at community events.
Commissioner Barmeier wondered if there would be ways to integrate programs related
to trees as a connection to the Blossom Festival of the City’s 2020 by 2020 tree planting
challenge.
Vice Chair Burley expressed interest in programming related to the drought and
gardening. She also suggested engaging the public with trivia type games while tabling.
Commissioner Hoffman suggested a literary themed book club or battle of the book
clubs based on literature. She also proposed a training on how to use electronic book
devices to access Library materials. She suggested a program on fake news might
generate interest as well and be a good way to promote the Library’s access to the New
York Times.
Reports
1. Nancy Howe, Santa Clara County Librarian
Allison Lew has been promoted to Services Manager for Public Technology. The District
is conducting a national recruitment to fill the Community Librarian position.
Additionally, the lineup for Silicon Valley Reads 2017 has been announced.
2. Rose Khoury, Acting Saratoga Community Librarian
West Valley College’s Emergency Coordinator recently approached the Library
regarding their emergency alert notification system. The Library was invited to be part of
the alert notifications. Opera San Jose will be visiting the Library and there will be a
hobby series workshop on January 7 on virtual reality. The Battle of the Books was very
successful with 20 teams competing.
3. Lisa Finley, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries
The Friend Café and Bookstore renovation is underway and a grand opening celebration
is being planned. There is an updated Brick, Tile, and Book Spine brochure available. The
Friends now have a new mascot, Buddy Bear, along with new bookmarks featuring
Buddy Bear. There will also be a change in the Retail Operations Manager position.

5. Crystal Bothelio, City of Saratoga
The City celebrated the installation of PLACE at Saratoga Library in October.
Additionally, the City Council Reorganization will be held on December 15.
Commissioners are welcome to attend.
Vice Chair Burley shared that she and Commissioner Barmeier met with the West Valley
College Librarians. They expressed interest in collaborating, but requested more
information and recommended continuing discussions after the College’s winter break.
