HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-23-2016 LIbrary Commission MinutesSaratoga Library Commission Minutes - Page 1 of 3 Saratoga Library Commission Regular Meeting Minutes Date: Tuesday, August 23, 2016 Time: 7:00 p.m. Location: Saratoga Library/Community Room 13650 Saratoga Avenue Saratoga, CA 95070 Call to Order: Chair Bob Gulino called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Roll Call Present: Chair Robert Gulino, Vice Chair Claire Campodonico, Commissioner Carol Barmeier, Flora Hoffman Absent: None Staff & Liaisons: Chris Brown, Rose Khoury, Alice Patrick, Elicia Ye, Crystal Bothelio Other: None Oral Communications on Non-Agendized Items: None Approval of Minutes: Draft minutes for the June 28, 2016 Regular Meeting BARMEIER/CAMPODONICO MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FOR THE JUNE 28, 2016 REGULAR MEETING. MOTION PASSED. AYES: GULINO, CAMPODONICO, BARMEIER, HOFFMAN. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: NONE. Agenda Items 1. West Valley College Partnership Update Summary: One of the Commission’s work plan items is to identify opportunities to partner with West Valley College. At the June meeting, Chair Gulino reported that he met with representatives of West Valley College to brainstorm ideas. There was consensus at the meeting to schedule a follow up meeting with the West Valley College Subcommittee (Gulino and Barmeier), County Library Nancy Howe, Saratoga Community Librarian Allison Lew/Acting Community Librarian Rose Khoury, and City Clerk Crystal Bothelio. Action: Update on efforts to identify collaboration opportunities. Chair Gulino shared that there was no updates and he would be reaching out to the West Valley College President to try to set up a meeting. Saratoga Library Commission Minutes - Page 2 of 3 2. Parking Lot Speeding Concerns Summary: The City received a complaint from a Library patron regarding speeding in the Library parking lot and recommended installation of speedbumps in the parking lot. Action: The City is seeking input from the Library Commission and Library staff on driver behaviors in the Library parking lot and feedback on the suggestion to install speedbumps. Crystal Bothelio with the City requested Commission feedback on speeding issues raised to the City. Commissioners discussed speeding issues that they have observed in the parking lot, including drivers turning very quickly into the short-term parking area, difficulty passing cars parked in the driveway between the short-term parking and Library, and speeding along the longer sections of the parking lot. Public Comment: Karen Burley provided insights into traffic safety concerns in the lot and suggested alternative lane striping. 3. Rescheduling December 2016 Meeting Summary: The Library Commission’s regular December meeting occurs during the City’s holiday closure. Action: Select an alternative date or cancel the December meeting. HOFFMAN/ CAMPODONICO MOVED TO RESCHEDULE THE DECEMBER MEETING FOR DECEMBER 13 AT 7:00 P.M. PENDING CONFIRMATION OF ROOM AVAILABILITY. MOTION PASSED. AYES: GULINO, CAMPODONICO, BARMEIER, HOFFMAN. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: NONE. 4. Commission Recruitment Summary: The City is currently accepting applications for 2 terms on the Library Commission (1 full term and 1 partial term). The application deadline is August 30, 2016. Action: Receive informational update from City staff. Crystal Bothelio with the City provided information on the Library Commission recruitment. Reports 1. Nancy Howe, Santa Clara County Librarian Chris Brown, Deputy Librarian, provided a report on behalf of County Librarian Nancy Howe. He noted that the Library would be closed September 3 and 4 for building upgrades, he shared that Rosetta Stone is now available to Library patrons, and announced that the Summer Reading program participation increased. Rose Khoury, Acting Saratoga Community Librarian Rose Khoury introduced Elicia Ye with Saratoga Library Teen Advisory Board (TAB) and then provided information on circulation, including use of electronic media and audio books. She then provided information about results of programming over the summer and highlighted upcoming programs. Elicia Ye, TAB Co-President, introduced herself to the Commission and provided information about upcoming TAB activities and goals for the school year. 3. Alice Patrick, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries Alice Patrick provided an update on renovations to the bookstore and new Book-Go- Round Manager. She also announced that the Friends would be participating in the 60th Anniversary Parade. 4. Robert Gulino, Library Commission Chair Chair Gulino suggested a future agenda item on funding for interior renovations that is expected to be allocated to Saratoga Library through the Library District. 5. Crystal Bothelio, City of Saratoga Crystal Bothelio provided an update on City activities, including the installation of PLACE outside of Saratoga Library, upcoming election forums, and other City events.
