HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.25.12 Youth Commission Training Minutes City of Saratoga Youth Commission Minutes DATE: Saturday, August 25, 2012 TIME: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. LOCATION: Warren Hutton House 13777 Fruitvale Ave. Saratoga, CA 95070 Call to Order Roll Call: Agrawal, Chang, Chien, Finch, Lee, Khare, Nookala, R. Pandya, Smith, Sreedhara, Tang, Vijay. 9:00 a.m. Report on Posting of the Agenda: Pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2, this meeting was properly posted on August 20, 2012. Accept Agenda Items: No additional items may be added pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2. Oral & Written Communication: Any member of the public may address the Commission about any matter not on the agenda for this meeting for up three minutes. Commissioners may not comment on the matter, but may choose to place the topic on a future agenda. I. Welcome/Breakfast II. Team-building activity –Prop-A-Skit. Commission broke into 3 groups; Given 4 props to use to makeup a skit to perform in front of other commissioners; Also, had to incorporate two words into skit, “Saratoga” and “Community” • Discussion – Activity reminded commissioners that… 1. Teamwork is essential for success 2. Work with what you got 3. Be creative 4. Stay focused 5. Set goals 6. Be efficient with your time & resources 7. Public speaking is important 8. Stay positive III. Presentation • Background of SYC • Mission -The Youth Commissioners serve as teen leaders in the community; communicating youth issues to the City Council; planning, promoting & participating in community service, educational & fun activities for Saratoga youth. o Ins & Outs ƒ Appointed by City Council ƒ Attendance Policy ƒ Term Limits ƒ Behavior Expectations ƒ Other Commissions (PRC, Library, Planning, Traffic, HPC) ƒ Accomplishments - Safe Rides, Skate Park, After-School Program o Events – Dances, Concerts, Lecture Series, Community Service o What you need to know • Communication via email • Monthly meetings – once, if not twice a month • Meeting locations - WHH ƒ Role of Chair - meet with Adam a week before meeting; adjourn meeting; represent commission; liaison between commission & Council ƒ Role of Vice-Chair – serve as sub for chair if absent ƒ Role of Secretary – take minutes; be organized ƒ Role of Members - Everyone Should Speak, “Look Interested, Not Bored” o Stay on topic o State your opinion o Be Enthusiastic o Open minded & respectful of others o Assertive o Remember who you represent o Be flexible o Follow-through on your assignments o Cooperate o Partners • City Council • Chamber of Commerce • Schools • Nearby Youth Commissions IV. Discussion on what SYC plans to do this year • Alumni Network – continue, led by Adam • Community Service – JW House (invite other teens to assist) • Media – Facebook, Saratoga News, Instagram • Political Forum – 1. Co-sponsor with Cupertino Youth Commission 2. Hosted by Evan Low? 3. Tuesday/Thursday night 4. Target HS clubs/students such as JSA, ASB, govt. classes 5. Doesn’t conflict with homecoming; schedule for last two weeks in October 6. Location – Lynbrook High Auditorium (Tang, Pandya checking on it) 7. Use contacts from SYC (Finch, Chang, etc) 8. Invite both city councils and have Mayors of each city introduce the event 9. Format – a. Cover full spectrum – local elections to presidential; have local party reps serve as speakers for national & state issues b. Moderator will ask question submitted by students • Project Cornerstone – 1. Invite students to events 2. Plan early 3. Approach student councils/elected office holders as opposed to formal leadership class 4. Offer team-building activities 5. Collaborate with local school and include elementary schools (WOW) • TFBA – Add more businesses & more publicity for selected business • WOW/BOW – Begin in November & offer again in April; add more schools; Biking for Redwood; Prizes can be gift cards come from TFBA winning business • Other Ideas – Kerri Walsh • Timeline – 1.
