Call to Order
Roll Call: Chang, Chien, Dev, Estes, Fariba (chair), Finch, Goel, Khare, Kuan, Morgan-Witts,
Mu, P. Nookala, V. Nookala, Smith, Sreedhara, L. Tang, S. Tang, Wilson.
Report on Posting of the Agenda: Pursuant to Government Code Section 54954.2, this
meeting was properly posted on May 5, 2011.
Accept Agenda Items: No additional items may be added pursuant to Government Code Section
54954.2.
Approval of April Minutes.
Attendance: absent—Dev, Goel, Kuan, Wilson
Approval of minutes: Estes, second—S. Tang
Oral & Written Communication: Any member of the public may address the Commission
about any matter not on the agenda for this meeting for up three minutes. Commissioners may
not comment on the matter, but may choose to place the topic on a future agenda.
I. New Business
a. Commission Update on new policies as of July 1, 2011
i. new attendance policy means you cannot miss more than 1 meetings (in a
row or not)
ii. -term limit now means only one term then must take a year off (doesn’t
count for next term for commissioners already on YC)
iii. -only 11 members for new term
b. Rotary Art Show – volunteers
i. - Thanks to Rotary Art Show Volunteers! $$ is good ☺
c. Events – Volunteer
i. Heritage Day -5/21/2011 at Blaney Plaza from 12-3 p.m.
ii. July 4th @ Azule Park
II. Old Business
a. ODFL

i. Monday, May 16 at Saratoga High
ii. Logistics - presenting in each of our classes throughout the day with a 90
second presentation, then pass around box
-send D an email about it
iii. Practice Speeches
1. (Use outline, but mostly memorize)
-Introduce Commission
-then go into ODFL shpiel
-Tell them that we’ll update them on progress
-End of day, gather boxes and count them
b. Evan Low Lecture (4/7)
i. Analysis
1. -Get more people next time?
2. -Lecture was good
3. -Publicize more to Campbell
4. -He’s a great talker, and very interesting
5. -It was good how he pulled the council members up there
6. -Pick weekend day next year? (Friday or Saturday) THEN
AGAIN kids have things planned on weekend nights
7. -Have on campus next year?—would get more support, cosponsor
with ASB, would influence teachers more in giving extra credit
c. Arbor Day (4/22)
i. Feedback
1. Unfortunately, after school program at Foothill was not
cooperative
2. -Had more kids than last year
3. -Good at raising awareness
4. -our activities didn’t work that well ,because the kids didn’t show
up :( But kids participated and we had more activities
5. -We did all we could do, it was out of our control
ii. Ideas/Recommendations for next year
d. Teen Concert (5/13) at Community Center
i. 5:30 -7:00 (6 per slot)
ii. 7:00-8:30
iii. 8:30- 10:00
e. End of the Year Party
i. Committee: Kia, Natasha, Ali
-Laser Quest then dinner, Birthday party room
-I can try to coordinate
-backup Pool Party

f. Overview of the Year
i. Reflections from graduating Seniors
1. Made progress moving from events to policy based things
2. We could make lectures more teen based (Apple, Facebook, etc.)
a. Make sure lecture has good speaking skills
3. Meetings have gotten a lot more organized
a. Attendance has slightly improved, commission seems more
passionate
4. Sub-committees are helpful, people are more open/ get more done
in small groups
5. Shifted from focus on concerts, unlike last year (this is good,
because it’s not exactly our demographic)
6. Try to find more community service (Sacred Heart gets very busy),
a. maybe try some more local things
b. downtown area
c. Organize service for other teens
d. Family giving tree
e. Villa Montalvo—good venue
7. Make sure to stay focused as the term continues, we should meet
more often, put SYC higher on priority list
8. Meeting twice a month would be a good idea
a. may not need sub-committees if that occurs
b. it’s doable and will help
c. could reevaluate as year goes on
9. Should strive to become more independent, take some work off of
Adam’s hands!
10. Although, we have improved a lot on independence, but we can
always improve even more
11. We can’t do everything—prioritize, start small
12. Training: sleepover helped with bonding
13. We should attend more events in City, more facetime with each
other and more facetime with the community
14. Collaborating with other commissions in and out of Saratoga
15. WOW program next year?
16. Focus on issues (Bullying, teen drinking, drug problem, stealing,
cheating…)
17. Picking a focus for the year (org/event/idea)
a. venue at Montalvo, community service, etc
b. Monte Sereno Commission
c. Parks and Rec. Commission
18. Address problems, talk to news, get exposure
19. Talk to Saratoga Library about advertising (they have events)

20. Talk at training about thinking outside of the box about problems
with teens that are unlike us (reaching out to kids we don’t usually
think about)

ii. Suggestions for Training
iii. Next Year’s Projects – TFBA, Meeting with other Youth Commissions &
neighborhood groups (such as the Chamber of Commerce)
