We’ve Been Working on the 1850s McWilliams House •Scullery with sections for laundry, canning, preparing food, washing dishes! •Shaving station for Mac McWilliams •Next step reupholster chairs in the parlor before yearend Pioneer Living Class •Gave 33 sessions •Served 11 schools from San Mateo to Santa Clara •Grades 2-5th •1000 students went through the program! New Programs •Expanding to include more 4th and 5th grades •Parlor focus is on clothing and manners Focusing on 1860s-1880s •Kitchen focus is on herbal remedies including herbs used today •Schoolhouse area for calligraphy •Outdoor lessons include beekeeping and woodstacking Education Docents Museum Docents--the Face of the Museum •Training refresher class with education, student, and museum docents •National Charity League partnership with two docents/month •Recruit! Recruit! •Special newsletter to keep docents up to date •Volunteer appreciation party Three Exhibits •Three exhibits with receptions! •Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the PPIE, speaker & author Laura Ackley •100 Years of Theater in Saratoga with reception •Merry Traditions of the Holidays (Nov) and Open House Three Local History Lectures •Lecture on Fremont Older and the 1916 bombing in SF by Author John Ralston •Author Elias Castillo spoke about the enslavement of California Indians by the Spanish Missions •Lecture on Castroville Mammoth and Paleo-Indians Discovery By Archaeologist Mark Hylkema on the Castroville dig where a Columbian Mammoth was discovered Extending Reach •Historian Ray Cosyn presented these topics at the museum (Lusitania, Flying Tigers, Great Indian Railroad) drawing 40 people •Presented 11 presentations on the peninsula on Prohibition, Flying Tigers, Peninsular Railroad, Saratoga--a Lumber Town The Blossom Festival •Continues to grow •More organizations participated in 2015 •Saratoga High School choir, Sacred Heart robotics team •Rotary provided volunteers Gearing up for 2016 Honoring Saratogans •Began event in 2014 with great results •Honor citizens across the community for service, contributions •Preserving memories Preserving and Archiving •Saratoga News donated 12,000 photos •Foothill College students are labeling and indexing •Continue to grow the museum collection Outreach to the Community •Second successful Mid- Autumn Festival with the Chinese American Women in SV •Mix of history,i.e. Transcontinental Railroad lecture/exhibit and traditional craft, music India Showcase, Oct. 25! •Showcasing dancing, singing, crafts, story telling from India •Including presentation on Saratoga history •1-4 PM at the Museum! •Organized by Rina Shah Fundraising for the Blacksmith Exhibit •Two fundraisers in 2015--an estate sale in July providing $3500 •The second fundraiser in Hakone Gardens with an estimated $6000 Wish List •Blacksmith Exhibit challenge •Storage Thanks for Listening •Annette Stransky, president, marketing •Robert Himel, vice president fund raising •Yuchi Wang, Treasurer •Recording Secretary, open •Ray Cosyn, historian •Bill Ford, director at large •Linda Hagelin, education director •Ron Hagelin, emeritus •Ernie Kraule, special projects •Rina Shah, social director •Jim Sorden, facilities •Michael Whalen, museum director •Membership, open •Alex Nugent HPC liaison •Jeff Johnson, webmaster •Lynette Breed, correspondence secretary •Mary-Lynne Bernald, city council liaison
