HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017 August Saratoga SourceThe community will soon see transformations begin on Prospect Road. Construction
will start on the Prospect Road Improvements Project in late September and is
expected to take ten to twelve months to complete. This highly-anticipated project
will be celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, August 17, at
2:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Prospect Center, 19848 Prospect Road.
This project will improve a 1.9-mile section of Prospect Road between Saratoga-
Sunnyvale Road and Lawrence Expressway. Upgrades include the installation
of bicycle detector loops, green bike lanes, ADA-compliant ramps, a new lighted
crosswalk, medians, and sidewalk. Improvements will be made to existing bus stops,
sidewalk, ramps, medians, and landscaped areas. The roadway pavement will also
be enhanced with micro-surfacing and striping.
A federal grant awarded to Saratoga for these specific improvements will pay for the
majority of this 5.3 million dollar project. The community can expect traffic delays
during construction, but one traffic lane in each direction on Prospect Road will
always remain open. The City will share project updates on Nextdoor, Facebook,
and Twitter. For more information, visit www.saratoga.ca.us/prospectroad

The Village is the heart of Saratoga, and it continues to evolve along with the needs and desires of the community. The policies
that guide development and land use in the Village are defined in the Village Plan, which was adopted in 1988. The City
Council then adopted the Village Design Guidelines in 1991 to use as a framework for development and renovation in the
Village.
Over the last 18 months, the City of Saratoga conducted extensive public outreach and a comprehensive process to review
and update the policies that shape the village to reflect the community’s vision. This process included a community survey, a
series of Planning Commission Study Sessions, and check-ins with the City Council.
The City Council reviewed and affirmed the Planning Commission’s recommendations for Phase I of the Village Policy Update
Process, focusing on village vision and parking circulation, in April. Phase II includes opportunity sites and village design and
character. The Planning Commission’s recommendations for the second phase will be presented at the City Council meeting
on Wednesday, August 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the Civic Theater, 13777 Fruitvale Avenue.

Mt. Eden Fire
On Monday, July 17, the Santa Clara County Fire Department responded to a 10-acre vegetation
fire near Mr. Eden Road. Residents were asked to stay off the roadways to allow access for fire
apparatus, but no evacuations were ordered and no structures were threatened. The City is
thankful to the Santa Clara County Fire Department, CAL FIRE, as and all assisting agencies for
their response and service to the Saratoga Community.
Q: My family of five includes my 6-year-old, 9-year-old, 13-year-old, my spouse, and myself.
I would like us to get involved at the local community center. What types of programs do you
provide for everyone in my family?
A: Great question! Our Art and Nature Camp is excellent for 5 to 7-year-olds to
explore the outdoors while developing an appreciation of art. Camp Wild Coyotes
is an in-house, City-run camp that is perfect for 8 to 11-year-olds. This exciting
camp has received a lot of positive feedback from campers and parents alike.
Teens can choose from a variety of classes and camps ranging from dance to
computer programming. We also offer adult classes, like Zumba, line dancing,
travel class, cooking class and ballroom. Another excellent program is the Great Getaways Travel
Program. The City plans and takes adults on trips to places, like the DeYoung Museum or a
Hamilton show, just to name a few.
