Saratoga Library Commission
Regular Meeting
April 25, 2017
Call to Order: Vice Chair Karen Burley called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Saratoga
Library Community Room at 13650 Saratoga Avenue in Saratoga.

Present: Vice Chair Karen Burley, Commissioner Carol Barmeier, Anandi
Krishnamurthy, Flora Hoffman
Absent: None

Approval of Minutes: Draft minutes for the February 28, 2017 Regular Meeting
BARMEIER/HOFFMAN MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FOR THE FEBRUARY 28,
2017 REGULAR MEETING WITH A CORRECTION TO COMMISSIONER BARMEIER’S
TITLE ON PAGE 3. MOTION PASSED. AYES: BURLEY, BARMEIER, KRISHNAMURTHY,
HOFFMAN. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: NONE.
Agenda Items
1. Library District Survey Results
Summary: The Santa Clara County Library District conducted a district-wide survey.
The results were presented at the December 2016 Library Commission Meeting.
Subsequently, the Commission agreed to schedule discussion of the results specific to
Saratoga Library at a future meeting.
Action: Receive and consider survey results.
Michael Eitner, Saratoga Community Librarian, provided an overview of the survey
findings and efforts currently underway to address some of the concerns identified in the
survey.
Vice Chair Burley suggested tracking program attendance numbers to monitor their
appeal.
Commissioner Barmeier requested information about peak use hours of rooms and
wondered if the Community Room or Orchard Room could be made available for groups.
Vice Chair Burley suggested patrons looking for quiet space may not be aware of the
quiet reading room.

Commissioner Hoffman suggested giving program participants a survey to provide
feedback on programming.
Commissioner Barmeier noted that many people who do not have a library card may not
be aware of all the services available through the Library.
Commissioner Hoffman suggested sending a press release to the Saratoga News with
information about the services available at the Library or writing a guest column
periodically about what is happening at the Library.
Commissioner Krishnamurthy noted that even existing Library patrons may not be fully
aware of the available services and outreach to card holders may also be helpful.
Vice Chair Burley suggested an informational flyer in the lobby to help bring awareness
to existing patrons.
2. Community News & Trends
Summary: Share news and trends within the community.
Vice Chair Burley provided an update on the Thinking Money exhibit collaboration with
West Valley College and shared that the Committee’s next step will be to discuss
potential collaboration opportunities for the fall or next spring.
Commissioner Barmeier recalled ideas raised at past meetings about collaborative
programing on the August solar eclipse.
Vice Chair Burley also noted past discussions about a collaborative robotics program.
She agreed to raise the programing ideas with the College to see if there is interest in
partnering.
Reports
1. Nancy Howe, Santa Clara County Librarian
Nancy Howe updated the Commission on the installation of new computers, the
District’s budget, a proposal to provide passport services at the District libraries, and the
new Bookmobile.
Commissioner Barmeier inquired about the collaboration between the County Library
District and Second Harvest Foodbank using the Bookmobile to give children food and
access to books over the summer.
Nancy Howe suggested that she could invite the staff member who worked on the effort
to a future meeting to describe the collaboration.
2. Michael Eitner, Saratoga Community Librarian
Michael Eitner reported that there is an increase in circulation of children’s materials,
the outcome of the Thinking Money exhibit, and upcoming events.

3. Lisa Finley, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries
Lisa Finley shared that the Friends made a donation for wayfinding within the Library
and provided information about upcoming Friends events.
4. Claire Campodonico, Library Commission Chair
No report.
5. Crystal Bothelio, City of Saratoga
Crystal Bothelio provided an update on City activities, including the website redesign,
Commission Recognition Dinner, Living Room Conversations, the formation of the
Public Safety Task Force, Silicon Valley Clean Energy, Arbor Day, and the resignation of
Claire Campodonico from the Library Commission.
