Saratoga Library Commission
Regular Meeting
June 27, 2017
Call to Order: Vice Chair Karen Burley called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m.

Approval of Minutes: Draft minutes for the April 25, 2017 Regular Meeting
HOFFMAN/KRISHNAMURTHY MOVED TO APPROVE THE DRAFT MINUTES FOR
THE APRIL 25, 2017 REGULAR MEETING. MOTION PASSED. AYES: BURLEY,
BARMEIER, KRISHNAMURTHY, HOFFMAN. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT:
NONE.
Agenda Items
1. Library Commission Support for Library Goals/Efforts
Summary: The Santa Clara County Library District conducted a district-wide survey.
The results were presented at the December 2016 Library Commission Meeting.
Subsequently, the Commission agreed to schedule discussion of the results specific to
Saratoga Library at a future meeting.
Action: Receive and consider survey results.
Vice Chair Burley introduced the item.
The Commission discussed the Library Service Plan and insights from the district-wide
survey.
2. Library Interior Space Improvement Funding
Summary: The Santa Clara County Library District is expected to allocate $200,000 for
interior space improvements at Saratoga Library in the Fiscal Year 2017/18 budget.
Action: Receive information about the funding for interior space improvements.
Vice Chair Burley shared her perspective that the Commission’s review of the district
survey is complete and the Commission has provided some thoughts on the interior
space review.

Michael Eitner, Saratoga Community Librarian, noted that while the funds will become
available July 1, there is still planning work that needs to be done. The Library is
considering different ways to collect user input on how the funds can be used, such as
focus groups that represent different stakeholder groups, one of which could be the
Library Commission. Ideally the funds will be spent by the end of the 2017/18 fiscal year,
but can be rolled into future fiscal years if necessary.
Deputy County Librarian Chris Brown noted that the funds for the interior space
improvements are new. Los Altos used the funding to improve the visibility of the
reference desk and make some of the seating in the library more multifunctional.
3. Library Commission Group Photo
Summary: Discuss taking a group photo of the Library Commission.
Action: Finalize plan for group photo.
The Commission agreed to take a group photo at the October meeting, after vacancies
have been filled.
4. Proposed Meeting with Cupertino Library Commission
Summary: Consider a proposal to hold a joint meeting with the Cupertino Library
Commission.
Action: Discuss proposed meeting with Cupertino Library Commission.
Vice Chair Burley introduced the item and asked the Commission to consider attending
the Cupertino Library Commission’s July and August meeting.
The Commission discussed the proposal to attend a Cupertino Library Commission
meeting.
Vice Chair Burley agreed to connect with the Cupertino Library Commission to see if
there are topics of joint interests that can be discussed.
The Commission agreed to discuss a joint meeting with Cupertino Library Commission
at the August meeting.
5. Collaboration with Friends of the Saratoga Libraries
Summary: Brainstorm ways that the Saratoga Library Commission and Friends of the
Saratoga Libraries can work together.
Action: Identify opportunities to collaborate with the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries.
Vice Chair Burley introduced the item.
Lisa Finley, President of the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries, supported the idea of
increased collaboration and suggested brainstorming ideas with Alice Patrick, the
incoming Friends President.

6. Boy Scout and Girl Scout Project List
Summary: Brainstorm project ideas for Boy Scout and Girl Scout volunteer projects at
the Library, such as Eagle Scout or Gold Award projects.
Action: Create list of prospective projects for Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts interested in
volunteering at Saratoga Library.
Vice Chair Burley introduced the item.
The Commission brainstormed project ideas and discussed criteria for Eagle Scout and
Gold Award projects.
Community Librarian Michael Eitner agreed to identify some project ideas to share with
the Library Commission.
Lisa Finley, President of the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries, also agreed to brainstorm
project ideas at the Book-Go-Round.
7. Community News & Trends
Summary: Share news and trends within the community.
Commissioner Barmeier thanked and complimented Vice Chair Burley for her post on
Nextdoor. She also commented upon the article in the Saratoga News regarding the
installation of new computers.
The Commission discussed tabling at upcoming events, including Saratoga Movie Nights
and Farmers Markets. The Commission received a demonstration of the Library’s mobile
services, which allow the Library to issue Library Cards.
Reports
1. Nancy Howe, Santa Clara County Librarian
Deputy County Librarian Chris Brown reported on behalf of Nancy Howe, Santa Clara
County Librarian. He shared updates about summer reading programs, summer meals
program in the southern part of Santa Clara County, and technology updates at County
libraries.
The Commission suggested additional classes on Adobe programs.
2. Michael Eitner, Saratoga Community Librarian
Michael Eitner, Saratoga Community Librarian, provided a report that included an
overview of the Saratoga Library Service Plan. He shared that the Commission can help
the Library by connecting the Library with various service groups in the community.
The Commission suggested making connections with AYSO, Junior Achievement, and
realtors. The Commission also recommended development of a factsheet about the

Library, including different types of media that are available at the library and programs
offered.
3. Lisa Finley, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries
Lisa Finley, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries President reported that a time capsule
burred at Hakone for 25 years was opened during a ceremony at Hakone. The capsule
included some materials from the Friends. She also shared that feedback on fieldtrips to
the Book-Go-Round were very positive. The Board is putting together curriculum for
future field trips. The annual general meeting is on June 28. Immediately following the
general meeting, the Board will be meeting and electing new officers for Fiscal Year
2017/18. Alice Patrick is slated to become the new president.

5. Crystal Bothelio, City of Saratoga
Crystal Bothelio provided an update on Silicon Valley Clean Energy enrollment, the
installation of a new electric vehicle charging station at the Library, Saratoga’s July 4
celebration, Parks Make Life Better Month, the Spring/Summer Saratogan, and Saratoga
Movie Nights.
