Saratoga Library Commission
Regular Meeting
October 24, 2017
Call to Order: Vice Chair Burley called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. in the Saratoga Library
Community Room at 13650 Saratoga Avenue.
Roll Call
Present: Vice Chair Karen Burley, Commissioner Robert Gulino, Flora Hoffman,
Anandi Krishnamurthy, Steven White
Absent: None
Also Present: Nancy Howe, Michael Eitner, Alice Patrick, Elicia Ye, Rita Wang, Crystal

Approval of Minutes: Draft minutes for the August 22, 2017
HOFFMAN/BURLEY MOVED TO APPROVE THE DRAFT MINUTES FOR THE AUGUST
22, 2017. MOTION PASSED. AYES: BURLEY, GULINO, HOFFMAN, WHITE. NOES: NONE.
ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: KRISHNAMURTHY.
Agenda Items
1. Selection of Chair and Vice Chair
Summary: The Chair and Vice Chair serve for a term of 1 year. Each Commissioner may
only serve as Chair or Vice Chair once during a 4-year term on the Commission.
Action: Select new Chair and Vice Chair.

PASSED. AYES: BURLEY, GULINO, HOFFMAN, WHITE. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN:

2. Group Photo
Action: Take a group photo.
The group took a group photo together in the Library.

3. Review of 2017 Work Plan, Consider 2018 Work Plan
Summary: Every year, the City Council considers and authorizes Commission work
plans. Typically, the Commission also presents progress on existing work plan items.
The Council review of work plans typically happens in the beginning of the calendar
year.
Action: Review and identify progress on the 2017 work plan, identify recommended
changes to the 2018 work plan.
The Commission discussed revisions to the work plan and agreed on the following
changes:
- Remove Item 2, Consider data of countywide survey relating to Saratoga Library and
make recommendations, from the Key Points of Work Plan.
- Replace the word recommendation with feedback under item 3 in the Key Points of
Work Plan.
- Remove Survey from Topics in Detail.
- Replace “Provide recommendations based on survey results regarding the $200,000
interior space budget” with “Support Library with Interior Space Review Project”
under Interior Space Budget in Topics in Detail.
The Commission agreed to finalize the work plan at the December meeting.
4. Rescheduling December Meeting Date
Summary: The December meeting falls on a furlough day for the City of Saratoga. In the
past, the December meeting has been rescheduled for earlier in the month.
Action: Consider rescheduling the December meeting.
The Commission agreed to reschedule the December meeting for December 19 at 7:00
p.m.
5. Community News & Trends
Summary: Share news and trends within the community.
The Commission discussed use of the laptop borrowing station, the Cultural Fashion
Show, library card outreach activities, and a library fact sheet.
Reports
1. Nancy Howe, Santa Clara County Librarian
County Librarian Nancy Howe provided updates on Discovery Tables, Kanopy, Robotics
programming, implementation of the Voters Choice Act, Friends/Commissioners Forum,
and the next JPA meeting.
2. Michael Eitner, Saratoga Community Librarian

Community Librarian Michael Eitner shared information about new programs for
children, the Fashion Show, a lecture on the Electoral College, and the number of
wireless users at the Library.
3. Alice Patrick, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries
Friends of the Saratoga Libraries President Alice Patrick announced the September
display of Saratoga authors, National Friends of the Libraries Week, the revamped
Friends website, Friends social media presence, the Book Go Round facility lease, the
Friends citywide membership mailing, and the upcoming Friends book sale.
4. Karen Burley, Library Commission Vice Chair
No announcement.
Elicia Ye with the Teen Advisory Board announced upcoming Teen Advisory Board
activities, including Crafternoon and Career and College Day.
5. Crystal Bothelio, Saratoga Deputy City Manager
Deputy City Manager Crystal Bothelio announced the new Saratoga Source, new
website, and RYDE.
