Go Green: Save the Trees Trees are essential to our well being, our environment, and our day to day lives. They produce oxygen, reduce smog, eliminate carbon dioxide, provide important habitats for wildlife, and have economic benefits as well. By converting carbon dioxide to oxygen, which in turn reduces smog, these trees greatly improve the respiratory health of those in our community. Not only that, but communities with more trees have been able to reduce heating costs by ten to fifteen percent, and air conditioning costs by twenty to fifty percent due to the shade the trees provide. As a result, these trees are helping us reverse climate change. They are also the homes or habitats of many animals including, quails, vultures, eagles, kites, sparrows, starlings, and many more animals that are native to Saratoga. (canopy.org) Not to mention, they look beautiful in medians and gardens, and often produce sweet tasting fruits for us to enjoy. So, if these trees do so much for us, what can we do to help them, and our environment? One thing that you can do is use the Carbon Footprint Calculator by the EPA to calculate your household's carbon footprint. Then, you can actively try to reduce that footprint. For example, by doing simple things such as, turning off the lights when you are leaving a room, using cold water to wash your clothes, or drying your clothes on a rack instead of with a dryer, you can greatly reduce the carbon footprint that your household is creating. If your entire neighborhood does the same thing, and other neighborhoods as well, we as a city can make a huge difference, and can make a positive impact on our environment. Another thing you can do is recycle or reuse your paper. Rather than throwing away a partially used piece of paper, you can leave it in a pile near a phone, or in a common area so that your family members can use the paper to take down notes or messages. By doing this.or finding other ways to reuse paper, you can reduce the amount of paper your household uses every month. In addition to this, try to use as many reusable products as possible. Reusable shopping bags rather than paper ones, cloth towels and napkins, reusable mugs, etc., can cut down excessive paper wastage. Caption: Go Green Poster by Karishma Goswanm; Another solution is to plant more trees. But, in Saratoga, choosing the right trees to plant can be difficult. Many people want to find drought resistant trees that consume less water, others want deer resistant plants that will stay full without needing to be gated in. A few trees that are great to plant in Saratoga are, Big Leaf Maple, Black and Blue Oak, California Buckeye, Coast Redwood, Coast Live Oak, and Douglas Fir. (saratoga.ca.us)You may recognize a few of these from your hikes around Saratoga, and the reason for this is that they are all trees that are native to our area. As a result, they are well accustomed to the weather and conditions here, and are easier to maintain and grow. We recently got out of a major drought, so drought resistant plants may sound appealing. Good drought resistant, shady, and fast growing trees include the California Sycamore, Western Sycamore, and the California Oak. (Davey Blog) Trees or plants that are more aesthetically pleasing, but still easy to grow include the Southern Magnolia, Oleander, Lantana, and Crape Myrtles, all of which are deer resistant as well. It was heard at a hearing a couple weeks ago, was appealed by a resident and so is being heard again tonight at 7 at the City Civic Theater if you would like to attend. Please let me know if you'd like any other information. Best, Caitlin On Sep 4, 2018, at 4:56 PM, Bill Cooper <bill@cgv.com> wrote: Caitlin, Do you have any insight into small cells for Mt Eden Road?
