Fund-raising and Volunteer activities for Library The Library Commission continued its discussion from the October 28 meeting regarding fund-raising and volunteer activities for the Saratoga Community Library. The Commission members agreed that more publicity was needed in the community regarding the financial state of the Library. Commissioner Towse suggested a public service announcement for volunteers and County Librarian Fuller suggested an article in the next issue of the Saratogan. Commissioner Watkins suggested approaching community groups such as Rotary and asking for their assistance. Chair Peacock suggested focusing on one item of need, such as magazines, and then deciding upon a fund-raiser. Community Librarian Barnes mentioned that she brought up the Library Commission's interest in involving the Friends of the Library with fund-raising efforts at the Friends' last meeting. The Commission agreed that it would be beneficial to meet with the Friends of the Library board members. Chair Peacock asked Staff Representative Campbell to draft a letter to the Friends' president and invite her to attend the January meeting along with other members of the Board who might want to have some input. Reports November meetings --Sally Towse Commissioner Towse reported on the November meetings. She noted that the Council has accepted and filed the letter regarding the Commission's postponement of the Library survey. Susan Fuller, County Librarian County Librarian Fuller noted that issues regarding the Alum Rock library continue to be discussed and will be revisited by the Board of Supervisors at a meeting on December 15, 1992. She added that the budget cuts will not be as deep as projected because the State and the County were using different base years for their calculations. She also added that the County Library system was expecting a deficit of $600,000 for FY 93/94, not including any cuts that may come from the State. At recent Library Commission meetings, discussion has focused on how to maintain the Library at its pre -budget cut service level. Specifically, the Commission has discussed various ideas for fund-raising and for promoting volunteerism. At the December Commission meeting, it was brought up that the Friends of the Library were probably focusing on similar issues and that it would be beneficial for the Commission to learn more about the Friends of the Library's accomplishments and future plans. The Commission would like to extend an invitation to you and any Board members who you feel would have some input to the Library Commission's January meeting. The Commission will meet on Wednesday, January 27, 7:30 p.m., at the Saratoga Community Library. I hope that you will be able to attend this meeting. Please let me know prior to January 15 if you will be attending. You may reach me at 867-3438, ext. 215. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, d',/b Karen Campbell Staff Liaison to the Library Commission Printed on recycled paper.
