HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-20 Written Communication -3.1Highlights of public comment at Saratoga City Council meeting on Wed., March 20, 2019
regarding Agenda item 3.1 "Allocation of Community Event Grant Program Funds."
Saratoga Oak Street School is one if not the oldest public elementary schools, to remain at the
same location, in the state of California.
Oak Street "Elementary school" is defined here as grades K-8 as it was up until approx year 1960
that it taught grades K-8. That's up to eight years of classes through 8'h grade, from the middle of
the 19'h Century until approx 1960, and a middle school of grades 6 thru 8 from approx 1960 thru
the graduating class of 1965. And, as you know, it's a K-5 grammar school from 1966 to present.
Saratoga Oak Street Grammar School annual reunion started in year 1995. This year's Oak
Street School reunion on Sat., July 27 at Wildwood Park in Saratoga village will be the 25'h
anniversary.
The committee, that first started this school reunion in 1995, were from our parents generation
who "started with the people who had graduated before WW2 started," and "it all started at a Los
Gatos High School reunion. All the kids from Saratoga sat at the same table and started to say
"What if" about a Grammar School Reunion." (a quote from a letter from Betty Bertelsen Coates
letter date of April 8, 2017).
Monies have been donated regularly whenever possible from our reunion committee to the Oak
Street School. The current committee has overseen the last five annual reunions, and we've
donated with no strings attached to Oak Street School:
$300 in October for our school reunion in July, 2018.
$350 in January for our school reunion in July, 2017.
$1,000 in Oct. 2016 for our school reunion in July 2016.
We received an event grant of $1000 from the City of Saratoga in year 2015.
We have applied the last two consecutive years for $1000 grant each year but did not receive a
grant for either of those two most recent years.
The prior committee for the Oak Street School reunion donated $2300 to the school for year
2013, and they donated regular in prior years as well.
Our current reunion committee has been together for five years, taking over the reigns from the
prior committee for the school reunion in year 2014. This year's reunion will be our 6'h reunion
planned by the current committee, and as mentioned the 25'h annual reunion. The current
committee welcomes all "Alumni and Friends of Saratoga Oak Street School," and "Visitors are
also welcome." We encourage the City of Saratoga to accept our current event grant request of
$500 for year 2019. Thank you.
