ROLL CALL Present: Chair Flora Hoffman, Vice Chair Robert Gulino, Commissioner Eric Lewis and Steven White Absent: Christina Meiser (excused) Also Present: Gail Mason, Michael Eitner, Alice Patrick, Crystal Bothelio ORAL COMMUNICATIONS ON NON-AGENDIZED ITEMS None APPROVAL OF MINUTES Draft minutes for the October 23, 2018 meeting GULINO/LEWIS MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FOR THE OCTOBER 23, 2018 MEETING. MOTION PASSED. AYES: LEWIS, GULINO, HOFFMAN, WHITE. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: MEISER. AGENDA ITEMS 1. Review of 2018 Work Plan, Consider 2019 Work Plan Summary: Every year, the City Council considers and authorizes Commission work plans. Typically, the Commission also presents progress on existing work plan items. The Council review of work plans typically happens in the beginning of the calendar year. Action: Review and identify progress on the 2018 work plan, identify recommended changes to the 2019 work plan. The Library Commission reviewed the work plan. Saratoga Library Commission Minutes - Page 2 of 3 GULINO/WHITE MOVED TO AMEND THE PROPOSED 2019 WORK PLAN WITH THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONS: • UNDER “SUPPORT LIBRARY EVENTS AND PROGRAMS,” ADD “INVITE THE CITY COUNCIL TO AND SHARE INFORMATION ABOUT LIBRARY AND LIBRARY COMMISSION PROGRAMS, EVENTS, AND ACTIVITIES WITH THE CITY COUNCIL.” • UNDER “PROMOTE LIBRARY EVENTS AND PROGRAMS; ENGAGE IN INFORMATION SHARING WITH LIBRARY AND PUBLIC,” ADD “WORK WITH FRIENDS OF THE SARATOGA LIBRARIES TO PROMOTE AND CROSS PROMOTE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES.” MOTION PASSED. AYES: LEWIS, GULINO, HOFFMAN, WHITE. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: MEISER. 2. Community News & Trends Summary: Share news and trends within the community. Vice Chair Gulino spoke about a workshop on political corruption and strategies for avoiding it. Commissioner Lewis spoke about a recommended book, Palaces for the People, and how the themes from the book can influence Library programing. Community Librarian Michael Eitner spoke about community building programs at the library that are planned for 2019. Vice Chair Gulino suggested a talk on self-driving cars and noted that he may be able to connect the Library with a potential speaker. REPORTS 1. Gail Mason, Santa Clara County Library Gail Mason with the Santa Clara County Library shared information about Silicon Valley Reads, new lending machines, ESL programming, and an article on the digital gap between wealthy and poor children. 2. Michael Eitner, Saratoga Community Librarian Michael Eitner, Community Librarian, shared information about the Library’s door count, expanded hours, planning for a May the 4th Be with You event, interior space improvements, and improvements to the Gogobiblio vehicle. 3. Alice Patrick, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries Alice Patrick with the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries shared information about Blind Date with a Book, wayfinding signage at the Library, changes to the phone plan used by Saratoga Library Commission Minutes - Page 3 of 3 the Friends, discounting the Friends agreement with the Yellow Pages, new Book-Go- Round signage, and a Chinese brush painting event hosted by the Friends. 4. Saratoga Library Teen Advisory Board No report 5. Flora Hoffman, Library Commission Chair No report 6. Crystal Bothelio, Saratoga Deputy City Manager Crystal Bothelio, Deputy City Manager, announced Paint the City, the City’s new Chinese language materials, and the City’s holiday closure. SUMMARIZE ACTION ITEMS Commissioner Eric Lewis agreed to share information about the Coral Reef Crochet Project with the Saratoga News. Vice Chair Robert Gulino agreed to share his self-driving car contact with the Saratoga Library.
