MINUTES
SARATOGA LIBRARY COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
FEBRUARY 26, 2019
CALL TO ORDER
Chair Flora Hoffman called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. at the Saratoga Library at 13650
Saratoga Avenue.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chair Flora Hoffman, Vice Chair Robert Gulino, Commissioner Eric
Lewis and Christina Meiser
Absent: Commissioner Steven White (excused)
Also Present: Jennifer Weeks, Michael Eitner, Alice Patrick, Gideon Srinivasan, Crystal

1. Library Commission Minutes
Recommended Action:
Review and approve the Library Commission minutes from December 18, 2018.
LEWIS/GULINO MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES FOR THE DECEMBER
18, 2019 MEETING. MOTION PASSED. AYES: GULINO, HOFFMAN, LEWIS,
MEISER. NOES: NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: WHITE.
2. What’s New in Library Technology
Recommended Action:
Receive presentation on and discuss Library technologies.
Chair Hoffman shared a summary of the Friends and Commissioners Forum, which
included a presentation on new library technologies.
Saratoga Community Librarian Michael Eitner shared a presentation on new library
technologies.
The Commission discussed strategies for creating greater awareness of Library services
and offerings. Ideas included sharing information about Library services through Nextdoor.
Library Commissioners also offered to provide Saratoga Library with a short article about
their favorite Library service to be shared on Nextdoor.

Commissioner Meiser offered to reach out to Diane Roche at the Library District.
3. Library Commission Duties and Purpose
Recommended Action:
Review and, if desired, provide the City Council with recommended changes to the Library
Commission duties/purpose statement to be considered at the Commission Work Plan
Study Session on March 11, 2019.

COMMISSION DUTIES/PURPOSE STATEMENT. MOTION PASSED. AYES:

4. Community News & Trends
Recommended Action:
Share news and trends within the community.

REPORTS
1. Nancy Howe, Santa Clara County Librarian
Jennifer Weeks, Library Services Manager, shared information about Silicon Valley
Reads, United Nations Film Festival, e-book circulation, and the family concert series.
2. Michael Eitner, Saratoga Community Librarian
Michael Eitner, Saratoga Community Librarian, shared information about the Coral Reef
Crochet Project, e-book circulation, and the Library’s May 4th event.
3. Alice Patrick, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries
Alice Patrick, Friends of the Saratoga Libraries President, shared information about a
Chinese brush painting event hosted by the Friends, Blind Date with a Book, selection of
a new newsletter chair, and the Blossom Festival.
4. Saratoga Library Teen Advisory Board
Gideon Srinivasan, Teen Advisory Board Member, shared information about Teen Coffee
House, Earth Day crafts, and the Clothing Swap.
5. Flora Hoffman, Library Commission Chair
Flora Hoffman, Library Commission Chair, made an announcement regarding the
Commission Work Plan Study Session.

Unable to attend Commission Work Plan Study Session. Make sure at least 1 person can
go.
6. Crystal Bothelio, Saratoga Deputy City Manager
Crystal Bothelio, Saratoga Deputy City Manager, shared information about changes to
Commissioner Emails, the Commission Work Plan Study Session, Form 700 deadline,
Commissioner Dinner, and Saratoga Youth in Government.
SUMMARIZE ACTION ITEMS
Commissioners agreed to send a short article on their favorite Library service to Michael Eitner,
Saratoga Community Librarian.
Commissioner Meiser volunteered to reach out to Diane Roche.
