Memorandum
To: Public Art Committee
From: Kayla Nakamoto, Community Engagement Coordinator
Date: August 13, 2019
Subject: Bronze Sculpture Program
At the last meeting, the Committee discussed
development of a bronze sculpture program based
on Mice on Main program in Greenville, South
Carolina. Mice on Main showcases a total of 9 bronze
mice that have been hidden throughout downtown,
typically on concrete surfaces, such as as the
sidewalk or on a planter. These hidden mice can be
found by following hints that are available online
and on a sign in downtown.
At the last meeting, the Committee considered potential locations, total number of
sculptures, sculpture size and shape, and foundries that can produce sculptures for
the program. The Public Art Committee agreed to use 6.25” x 7.25” x 6.25” acorn-
shaped bronzes from Alleman Studios for the program. Additionally, the Committee
requested a future agenda item on the number of bronzes and locations, so that the
Committee could recommend the public art program to the City Council. Per the City
Public Art Policy, public art displays of 3 years or more requires City Council
authorization.
Potential locations for the sculptures include:
Civic Center
Saratoga Library
Blaney Plaza
The Village Bulb Outs
If the Committee finalizes the total number and locations of the sculptures, the
bronze sculpture program could be presented to the City Council on August 21, 2019
for final decision. If the City Council approves the installation of the bronze pieces,
production is expected to last 8 to 10 weeks. It will take roughly 1 to 2 weeks for
shipping and installation may take up to 3 weeks. The Committee can create hints
that will help the public find the different hidden acorns after receiving approval for
the program.
A revised program cost estimate from Alleman Studios based on the Committee’s
discussion thus far is below. The total cost to create, ship, and install 9 pieces is
$18,835.00.
Item Cost
Cost per piece $1,850.00
Shipping (9 pieces) $385.00
Installation (9 pieces) $1,800.00
Total Cost for 9 Pieces $18,835.00
