MINUTES
JUNE 30, 2020
PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE
REGULAR MEETING
The Public Art Committee meeting was called to order virtually using Zoom at 4:03 p.m.
ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Council Members Mary-Lynne Bernald, Yan Zhao
ABSENT: None
ALSO PRESENT: Crystal Bothelio, Assistant City Manager
Kayla Nakamoto, Community Engagement Coordinator
Angela McConnell, Montalvo Arts Center Executive Director
Kelly Hudson, Montalvo Arts Center Managing Director

AGENDA ITEMS:
1. Gateway Sculpture
Recommended Action:
Discuss opportunities for a sculpture at Saratoga Gateway with representatives of
Montalvo Arts Center.
Crystal Bothelio, Assistant City Manager, introduced the item.
Angela McConnell, Montalvo Arts Center Executive Director, discussed some of the
factors to be considered as part of a sculpture installation or program.
The Public Art Committee discussed some of their limitations and desired outcomes.
The Public Art Committee, Montalvo Arts Center Executive Director Angela McConnell,
and Montalvo Arts Center Managing Director Kelly Hudson brainstormed sculpture
opportunities at the Saratoga Gateway, including the option to loan artwork to be
displayed for limited period, involving the community in the process and use of a
focus group, and how the artwork can be used to reflect Saratoga values.
The Committee expressed a desire to continue working with Montalvo Arts Center
and to learn more about local artists recommended by Montalvo Arts Center that may
want to loan artwork to the City to be displayed at the Gateway for a limited period.
The Committee asked staff to reach out to several local artists recommended by
Montalvo Arts Center to see if the artists are interested in displaying a sculpture at

the Gateway and have any existing artwork that they feel may be compatible with the
location and community values. The Committee also requested additional
information about the Rock Paper Scissors sculpture by Kevin Box.
2. Public Art Committee Minutes
Recommended Action:
Review and approve the Public Art Committee minutes from June 8, 2020.
ZHAO/BERNALD MOVED TO APPROVE THE PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE MINUTES
FROM JUNE 8, 2020. MOTION PASSED. AYES: BERNALD, ZHAO. NOES: NONE.
ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: NONE.
3. Public Art Budget
Recommended Action:
Receive status update on the Public Art Fiscal Year 2019/20 and Fiscal Year 2020/21
budget.
Kayla Nakamoto, Community Engagement Coordinator, provided an update on the
budget.
4. Updates on Existing Projects
Recommended Action:
Receive updates on existing programs, including Paint the City, Chalk-full of HeART,
and Silly Walk Signage.

programs.
5. Future Meetings
Recommended Action:
Discuss agenda topics and scheduling of future meetings.
The Committee agreed to meet again on August 18, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. and requested
discussion of a sculpture at the Gateway as well as a status update on the Library
Commission’s review of the Commission’s scope and work plan.
