Teen Vaping in Santa
Clara County
Akanksha Roy - Monta Vista High School
Purpose of this Presentation
◦To educate the teen council members and spread
awareness in Santa Clara County about teen vaping
because the current generation is at risk

Statistics in Santa Clara County
◦A study conducted in 2019 showed that at least 1 in 3
teens (31.6%) used e-cigarettes at least once and
approximately 13.2% of teens vape regularly in SC
County
◦Among regular users of e-cigarettes, 82.3% used
flavored vapes

What are e cigarettes ?
4
●E-cigarettes are battery
operated smoking devices
that are used to inhale an
aerosol which contains
nicotine, flavorings, and
other chemicals.
Advertisements by Vaping Companies to
Promote their Disposable Vape Devices
5
◦E-cigarettes are heavily
advertised, especially on
social media, such as
Instagram or Snapchat, and
on websites such as Etsy or
Depop
◦These apps and sites are
frequented by teens, so
they are more likely to buy
vape products
Why is Vaping harmful for Adolescents?

https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/publications/healthy-living/vaping-nicotine-alter-teen-brain-development-mirror-cling.html
◦Adolescents do not have fully developed brains, so they are
more susceptible to developmental delays
◦Ingesting nicotine in high levels negatively impacts
neuroplasticity
◦Can lead to synaptic pruning, the deletion of neuron
connections that are formed during childhood
◦Harder time saying no, which can lead to addiction
◦It is also an expensive habit
◦E-cigarettes cost between $10-$20 depending on size
7
E-cigarette Harms Teen Brain Development
◦E-liquid contains harmful chemicals such as lead and nicotine, which are neurotoxins.
Studies have shown neurotoxins cause restlessness and developmental delays in
children.
◦I did a project for the Synopsys Science Fair last year about “The Effect of Different
Concentration of E-liquid on 2 Generations of Drosophila Melanogaster”
◦Overall, in the 1st generation, the climbing time decreased as the concentration of
e-liquid increased which implies that an increase in concentrations of e-liquid causes the
Drosophila to be overactive.
◦In the 2nd generation, however, the opposite occurred; as the concentration of e-liquid
increased the climbing time slows, which suggests the negative impact on the movement
of the next generation.

◦Large Volume Devices are the vape products
that are advertised to have 800 or more puff
per device
◦This is equivalent to about 3.5-8.5 packs of
cigarettes. All that is packed into one device
that adolescents can use as frequently as
possible
◦I interned at SRITA (Stanford Research into
Tobacco Advertising) under Dr. Robert
Jackler, which gave me more insight into the
vaping industry and their advertising
techniques to attract younger audiences 8
Large Volume Devices and its effects on teens
Exploitation of COVID 19 by Vaping Marketers
9
◦Many vaping companies have taken
advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to
increase sales by offering free masks, hand
sanitizers, and toilet paper
◦Young people who use e-cigarettes have a
5x higher risk of being diagnosed with
Covid-19 than non-users

Youth Art Contest to Highlight
Anti-Tobacco Messaging
◦I have started an initiative,
YesToYouth, which uses
artwork to spread awareness
among teens about the
dangers of tobacco use
◦Short-term goal: Prevention
education
◦Long-term goal: Regulation of
large volume disposables
