SARATOGA YOUTH COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
JANUARY 12, 2021
Teleconference/Public Participation Information to Mitigate the Spread of COVID‐19
This meeting will be entirely by teleconference. All Commission members, staff, and public will
only participate via the Zoom platform using the process described below. The meeting is being
conducted in compliance with the Governor’s Executive Order N‐29‐20 suspending certain
teleconference rules required by the Ralph M. Brown Act. The purpose of this order was to provide
the safest environment for the public, elected officials, and staff while allowing for continued
operation of the government and public participation during the COVID‐19 pandemic.
Members of the public view and participate in the meeting by using the Zoom website
https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/81747605286 or App (Webinar ID 817 4760 5286) and using
the tool to raise their hand in the Zoom platform when directed by the Chair to speak on an
agenda item.
The public will not be able to participate in the meeting in person.
As always, members of the public can send written comments to the Commission prior to the
meeting by commenting online at www.saratoga.ca.us/yc prior to the start of the meeting. These
emails will be provided to the members of the Commission and will become part of the official
record of the meeting.
During the meeting the Chair will explain the process for members of the public to be recognized
to offer public comment.
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Governor’s Executive Order, if

ORAL COMMUNICATIONS ON NON-AGENDIZED ITEMS
Any member of the public may address the Youth Commission for up to three (3) minutes on
matters not on the Agenda. The law generally prohibits the Youth Commission from discussing or
taking action on such items. However, the Youth Commission can schedule the item for discussion
at a future meeting.
AGENDA ITEMS:
1. Youth Commission Minutes
Recommended Action:
Review and approve the minutes from the December 8, 2020 meeting.
Raamkumar motioned to approve the minutes. Zhai seconded the motion. AYES:
Bradley, Hicks, Huang, Jain, Leung, Liu, Madhan, Raamkumar, Wang, Zhai. NOES:
none. ABSTAIN: none. PASSED 10-0.
2. Treasurer Report and Fundraising
Recommended Action:
Receive report from the Youth Commission Treasurer.
● GoFundMe Inclusion update:
○ $0 raised so far
○ Each commissioner should send 10 emails/texts by next meeting
○ Inclusion Subcommittee to take over the GoFundMe fundraiser
Madhan motioned for the Inclusion subcommittee to take the lead on the fundraising
plan and accept the Treasurer Report. Leung seconded the motion. AYES: Bradley,
Hicks, Huang, Jain, Leung, Liu, Madhan, Raamkumar, Wang, Zhai. NOES: none.
ABSTAIN: none. PASSED 10-0.
3. YouTube Subcommittee Report
Recommended Action:
Receive updates from the YouTube Subcommittee. YouTube Series: Nivi, Jacob, Aria.
● 3 tentative release dates for podcasts
○ Jan 29: Climate Change and Sustainability Podcast
■ Harker Green Team
○ Feb 5: Wildfire Podcast
■ Interview local firefighters
○ Feb 12: Alaskan Tongass National Forest
Wang motioned to accept the YouTube subcommittee update. Liu seconded the motion.
AYES: Bradley, Hicks, Huang, Jain, Leung, Liu, Madhan, Raamkumar, Wang, Zhai.
NOES: none. ABSTAIN: none. PASSED 10-0.
4. Inclusion Subcommittee Report

Recommended Action:
Receive updates from the Inclusion Subcommittee. Inclusion: Nicole, Nicita, Carolyn,
Cameron.
● Winter Craft Social Feedback:
○ What went well?
■ Enjoyed the crafts, videos, and live instruction
■ Event was very inclusive
■ Participants who attended were very happy
■ Liked the holiday music in the background
○ What could have made it better:
■ Better marketing; Reach out to schools, teachers, or school clubs and
reach out earlier
■ Plan for a longer event next time because the ending felt rushed
■ Interact more with attendees
■ Work on music volume, spotlighting
■ Not necessarily have all the commissioners attend
● Next Craft Social in Spring
○ Plan for an event at the end of February/early March
○ Have Inclusion Subcommittee bring an event with specifics to be adopted
next meeting
○ Charge minimal fee or send kits to incentive people to attend
Zhai motioned to accept the Inclusion subcommittee report and move forward with the
Spring crafts event. Leung seconded the motion. AYES: Bradley, Hicks, Huang, Jain,
Leung, Liu, Madhan, Raamkumar, Wang, Zhai. NOES: none. ABSTAIN: none.
PASSED 10-0.
5. Holiday Subcommittee Report
Recommended Action:
Receive updates from the Holiday Subcommittee. Holiday Subcommittee: Michelle, Alex,
Timothy, Linnea.
● Teen Kindness Week Update:
○ Saratoga is partnering with Campbell and Cupertino commissions to host a
kindness week from Feb. 15-19
■ Monday: Be kind to yourself
■ Tuesday: Write thank you cards for essential workers and neighbors
■ Wednesday: City food drive
■ Thursday: Trash pickup day
■ Friday: Kindness day
○ Trash Pickup Possible Locations:
■ Wildwood Park
■ Locations in Campbell or Cupertino
● Card Making kits
● Holiday Cookbook Update:
○ ~24 submissions
○ Cookbook will stay online based on submission feedback
○ Commissioners should sent out cookbook form to give personal touch
● Boba Kit Updates:

○ Tentative target date: May
○ Boba grams
■ Ship boba kits
■ Provide option with a card to ship as a present
○ Possibly move to Inclusion Subcommittee later
Liu motioned to accept Holiday subcommittee’s Teen Kindness week, Spring cookbook
program, and boba fundraiser. Bradley seconded the motion. AYES: Bradley, Hicks,
Huang, Jain, Leung, Liu, Madhan, Raamkumar, Wang, Zhai. NOES: none. ABSTAIN:
none. PASSED 10-0.
6. Color Dash Discussion
Recommended Action:
Discuss alternatives for Color Dash community event and/or fundraiser.
● Color Dash Update:
○ Traditional event will not be held this year
● Alternative hike event
○ Possible locations: Villa Montalvo, Quarry Park, Stevens Creek Trail
■ If Commission to fundraise for inclusive playground equipment then,
plan for hikes to be inclusive
○ 3-4 weekend challenge
○ Participation prize options (mailed or handed out):
■ Stickers inspired by trails
■ Mailed certificates
■ Rubber bracelets
○ Big prize ideas (TBD at next meeting):
■ Running Shoes
■ Gift Card
■ Subscription to Audible or Spotify
■ Air Pods
■ Fit Bit/Watch
○ Tentative date: weekends in April
● 3 potential subcommittees: marketing, registration/logistics, prize/donations
● YC to think about each subcommittee and choose which one they’d prefer to be on
next meeting; think about suitable trails and prizes
Huang motioned for the YC to move forward with a hike as an alternative to the Color
Dash and for subcommittees to be assigned next meeting. Hicks seconded the motion.

Zhai. NOES: none. ABSTAIN: none. PASSED 11-0.
7. SED Talks: Entrepreneurship
Recommended Action:
Discuss potential speakers for the SED Talks Spring event.
● Event topic: Business/Entrepreneurship
○ Potential speakers: Henry Weng (national economics organization), Females
for Finance founders, Naisha Agrawal (Singing for Smiles nonprofit), Sue’s
Cafe (local business owners)

■ Feedback: cool to listen to high school entrepreneurs, business owners
(Sue’s; La Fondue), tech entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley
○ Tentative date: March 20 around 4pm (time tbd)
○ Possible things to improve for SED talks:
■ Speaker websites
■ webinar/google form for questions beforehand?
○ Circle back to subcommittee next meeting

8. Future Agenda Items
Recommended Action:
Consider agenda items for upcoming meetings. The next Youth Commission meeting is
scheduled for January 26, 2021.
● Next meeting: subcommittee updates, Kindness Week updates, SED Talks Spring
event updates, potential mayor conversation with YC (prepare two or three
questions for the mayor next time)
