HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-09-2021 Youth Commission MinutesSARATOGA YOUTH COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING MARCH 9, 2021 Teleconference/Public Participation Information to Mitigate the Spread of COVID‐19 This meeting will be entirely by teleconference.All Commission members,staff,and public will only participate via the Zoom platform using the process described below.The meeting is being conducted in compliance with the Governor ’s Executive Order N‐29‐20 suspending certain teleconference rules required by the Ralph M.Brown Act.The purpose of this order was to provide the safest environment for the public,elected officials,and staff while allowing for continued operation of the government and public participation during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Members of the public view and participate in the meeting by using the Zoom website https://us02web.zoom.us/s/87577525854 or App (Webinar ID 875 7752 5854) and using the tool to raise their hand in the Zoom platform when directed by the Chair to speak on an agenda item. The public will not be able to participate in the meeting in person. As always,members of the public can send written comments to the Commission prior to the meeting by commenting online at www.saratoga.ca.us/yc prior to the start of the meeting.These emails will be provided to the members of the Commission and will become part of the official record of the meeting. During the meeting the Chair will explain the process for members of the public to be recognized to offer public comment. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS ON NON-AGENDIZED ITEMS Any member of the public may address the Youth Commission for up to three (3)minutes on matters not on the Agenda.The law generally prohibits the Youth Commission from discussing or taking action on such items.However,the Youth Commission can schedule the item for discussion at a future meeting. AGENDA ITEMS: 1.Youth Commission Minutes Recommended Action: Review and approve the minutes from the February 23,2021 meeting. Leung motioned to approve the February 23 minutes.Huang seconded the motion. AYES:Bradley,Huang,Jain,Leung,Liu,Lu,Madhan,Raamkumar,Wang,Zhai. NOES: none. ABSTAIN: none. PASSED 10-0. 2.GenerationUp Recommended Action: Discuss opportunities of participation and advocacy interests. ●May not add to Saratoga Commission work plan this year due to planning for other events; Commissioners free to decide individually Zhai motioned for the Youth Commission to not move forward with GenUp at this time. Madhan seconded the motion.AYES:Bradley,Huang,Jain,Leung,Liu,Lu,Madhan, Raamkumar, Wang, Zhai. NOES: none. ABSTAIN: none.PASSED 10-0. 3.Treasurer Report and Fundraising Update Recommended Action: Receive report from the Youth Commission Treasurer. ●Commissioners to continue sharing GoFundMe fundraiser 4.SED Talks: Entrepreneurship Recommended Action: Review SED Talks Spring event and confirm the schedule for March 20, 2021. ●Wang to write an article on SED Talks for The Saratoga Falcon for publication and marketing ●Staff liaison to print out flyers ●Commissioners to send out graphic to at least two friends,relevant clubs,or reach out to school administration for advertising in newsletters Saratoga Youth Commission Agenda – Page 2 of 4 5.Saratoga Speaks Report Recommended Action: Receive updates from the Saratoga Speaks Subcommittee.YouTube Series:Nivi,Jacob, Aria. ●Subcommittee currently planning to film upcoming episodes ●In the process of finding sources with different viewpoints Wang motioned to adopt the speakers presented in this report.Leung seconded the motion.AYES:Bradley,Hicks,Huang,Jain,Leung,Liu,Lu,Madhan,Raamkumar, Wang, Zhai. NOES: none. ABSTAIN: none. PASSED 11-0. 6.Inclusion Subcommittee Report Recommended Action: Review program details and confirm scheduling for the emergency preparedness kit workshop on March 27, 2021. Inclusion: Nicole, Nicita,Carolyn, Cameron. ●Subcommittee invited Mayor Zhao ●Commissioners to share this with school special education programs and clubs (ie. Perfect Pals) 7.Toga Trails 2021 Recommended Action: Receive report from subcommittees on community event,hiking fundraiser.Discuss prizes and incentives for the public to participate. Discuss marketing and target participation goals. ●Logistics/registration subcommittee ○Subcommittee finished taking photos of the four trails ○Subcommittee to finish writing small blurbs/photos for each trail ●Marketing subcommittee ○Subcommittee to finalize flyer and maps by the end of this week ○Registration fee set at $10 per person;for each registration,$1 is going towards inclusive playground equipment fundraiser ○3x3 sticker finalized ●Prize subcommittee ○Ask community for potential sponsorships for subscription prize ○Finalize costs for random drawing prizes and continue brainstorming registration prizes Zhai motioned to adopt the aforementioned plan for all subcommittees.Raamkumar seconded the motion.AYES:Bradley,Hicks,Huang,Jain,Leung,Liu,Lu,Madhan, Raamkumar, Wang, Zhai.
