Page 1 of 2 MEMORANDUM MEETING DATE: May 17, 2021 TO: Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) FROM: Kayla Nakamoto, Administrative Analyst SUBJECT: Saratoga Community Harvest and Outreach On April 21, 2021, the City Council authorized a 1-year agreement with Orchard Keepers for maintenance of the Saratoga Heritage Orchard. Since Orchard Keepers does not have a need for the fruit produced from the orchard, staff has been working with Orchard Keepers to identify opportunities for the community to enjoy the fruit in a manner consistent with the Heritage Orchard Master Plan. One option to ensure that the community benefits from the fruit and has a chance to learn about the rich agricultural history of Saratoga is through Community Harvest days. The apricot harvest is expected to occur in mid-June. When the fruit is ripe, the City could host a Community Harvest on a Saturday. During the event, the community would learn how to pick fruit safely and responsibly before filling a City-provided bucket with fruit and exploring various resource tables to learn about the history of the orchard and the City. These Harvest Days may be scheduled periodically as the different fruit in the orchard ripens. In addition to the Community Harvest, Village Harvest could be invited to pick fruit for local food banks as they did in 2020. To encourage community participation, the City would work with Village Harvest to increase the number of Saratoga residents participating in the volunteer collection. The first of these is expected to occur in mid-June during when apricots are ready to be harvested. This event would be hosted on a Saturday, allowing the community to visit the orchard to pick apricots under the guidance of Orchard Keepers, learn about the history of the orchard and City through resource tables at the event, and learn about residents would be invited to learn about the agricultural history of Saratoga and enjoy the Heritage Orchard by being involved in this community harvest. 3 Page 2 of 2 A draft sign proposed to be installed in the orchard is attached.
