Hi all Apricot harvest is behind us, prunes are slowly ripening, and the orchard health is making strides towards improving. Past and Current tasks: Community Harvest- word has gotten out! Last year we were worried there wouldn’t be enough interest, this year we see there is too much interest! We are making our suggestions/recommendations to the city to help guide their plan for the prunes and for next years apricot harvest. This year, there was about half the yield as last year (so it goes with orcharding) but probably double the interest in the orchard. There were 3 successful community harvests and 1 Village Harvest picking for local food banks. With the information gleaned from this years harvest, we are confident the city will create a plan that will allow more residents to access the fruit for next year. As with any new program, working out the kinks is a work in progress, but seeing how happy and excited the families were to pick fruit shows us we are on the right track. Cover cropping- we mowed and lightly cultivated the winter cover crop in early June. Then came through and planted the summer cover crop of buckwheat, sudan grass, and mustard. This summer cover crop is growing well and we will do our first mow in middle of July. Gopher and ground squirrels- we are trapping like mad out there! So many… Pruning- we just started pruning the apricots, and will continue though the month of July. Nutrients- we will spread gypsum next week and do a foliar feeding to all the trees once we see a growth response from the pruning. Prune plums- we are supporting limbs and monitoring crop for harvest Challenges this year: Oak Root Fungus- this soil pathogen continues to take down trees. I consulted with a UC Ag agent to make sure our plan is robust enough. He was confident we are and will be doing (with the new planting this winter) everything we can to mitigate the pathogen. Gophers and ground squirrels- we are hitting them hard in the orchard, but they have huge populations around the periphery of the orchard (creek and library hardscape). We are working with the city to get some back up help in those areas. 5 Upcoming: Planting- still a bit of time (planting in Jan) but we are making sure we have all our ducks in a row to have success with the plant out. Let me know if anyone has any questions!
