Hi all
I can't believe it's already Fall!?
With the main growing season behind us we are turning towards our big replanting project set to begin in January. We
are organizing our plan of action to make sure the new trees have the best chance of success given all of the givens
(ORF, ground squirrels). This growing season in retrospect has been relatively mild, with having 2 seasons under our
belts we are learning the nuances of the land and trees and building a strong relationship with the orchard. We are
already looking forward to next years growing season, with the added responsibility of caring for 500 new trees, and
continuing the support for the new community harvest program. Please let me know if there are any questions and/or
anyone would like a walk around the orchard.
Gophers/Ground Squirrels‐ Thanks to the City staff for hiring a pest control service to get a handle on the ground
squirrels that were living in the dry creek. Since the service began, we have been seeing a huge reduction in population.
We have been clearing them from the orchard, and now with the peripheries taken care of, they are becoming a non
issue. We will work with the City to let them know if the creek starts becoming active again as a safe haven. As for
gophers, this is their slow time of year. We are still actively trapping though.
Soil‐ Our summer cover crop of Sudan grass created tons of organic matter which feeds the system. We will be
spreading compost and then tilling in the sudan grass to then plant our winter cover crop over the next 2 weeks.
Oak Root Fungus‐ We just did a pass through the orchard with the excavator to remove any dead/dying trees from the
ORF. We left the holes open so as to dry out the soil/fungus in preparation for the new planting this winter. We met with
a UC Ag advisor this summer and learned we were already doing everything we could do deal with the soil pathogen.
Community Harvest‐ we worked diligently with the City to continue this new program to have community members out
to pick the prune harvest. As with any new program, we are experiencing challenges and successes. Each event is
allowing this new program to gain traction and to build upon the earlier one. The one common denominator is that the
community is thrilled to be in the orchard picking fruit!
Upcoming‐
Cover cropping‐ sowing the winter covers and spreading compost over the next 2 weeks
Prepping the site for the plant out of 500 new trees in January
That’s about all for now.
Please let me know if you have any questions
