COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
APRIL 11, 2022
CALL TO ORDER
Chair Eric Lewis called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.
ROLL CALL
Present: Chair Eric Lewis, Vice Chair Victoria Zhang, Commissioner Robert Gulino,
Cristina Meiser

AGENDA ITEMS
1. Saratoga Teen Advisory Board Report
Recommended Action:
Receive Saratoga Teen Advisory Board report.
Ahana Chakraborty and Ayushi Chakraborty from the Saratoga Library Teen Advisory
Board reported on recent activities and upcoming events, including College Day, Trade
and Talk, SED Talks with the Saratoga Youth Commission, and Coffeehouse.
2. Allocation of Community Event Grant Program FY 2022/23 Funds
Recommended Action:
Review the competitive Community Event Grant Program applications for Fiscal Year
2022/23 and provide a recommendation including recipients and funding allocations for
City Council consideration.
Kayla Nakamoto, Administrative Analyst, provided a report on the Community Event
Grant Program.
Judy spoke on behalf of the application for Community Art Exhibition of Winning Artworks
of a children’s art contest themed as “Peace Love Unity.”

Iris Bendahan spoke on behalf of the application for Community Mitzvah Day – Day of
Social Action.
Hueling Su spoke on behalf of the application for Dragon Boat Festival.
Ramya Vasu spoke on behalf of the application for Saratoga Blossom Festival 2023 (Girl
Scouts #618 Craft).
GULINO/ZHANG MOVED TO RECOMMEND CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL OF THE
FOLLOWING COMMUNITY EVENT GRANT PROGRAM ALLOCATIONS FOR FISCAL YEAR
2022/23:
• ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT - $1,500
• COMMUNITY ART EXHIBITION OF WINNING ARTWORKS OF A CHILDREN ART
CONTEST THEMED AS 'PEACE LOVE UNITY’ - $2,000
• COMMUNITY MITZVAH DAY - DAY OF SOCIAL ACTION - $2,000
• DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL - $2,000
• MLK JR. DAY CELEBRATION - $2,000
• SARATOGA BLOSSOM FESTIVAL 2023 (GIRL SCOUTS #618 CRAFT) - $500

3. Library & Community Engagement Commission Minutes
Recommended Action:
Review and approve the minutes from the February 7, 2022 Regular Meeting and March
15, 2022 Special Meeting.
GULINO/ZHANG MOVED TO APPROVE THE FEBRUARY 7, 2022 REGULAR MEETING
(WITH EDITS TO REMOVE REPEATED SENTENCE IN CITY REPORT) AND MARCH 15, 2022
SPECIAL MEETING. MOTION PASSED. AYES: LEWIS, GULINO, MEISER, ZHANG. NOES:
NONE. ABSTAIN: NONE. ABSENT: NONE.
4. Santa Clara County Library District Report
Recommended Action:
Receive Santa Clara County Library District report.
Stephen Fitzgerald, Santa Clara County Deputy County Librarian, shared a National
Library Week presentation.
5. Saratoga Community Library Report
Recommended Action:
Receive Saratoga Community Library report.
Nichole King, Saratoga Community Librarian, reported on recent and upcoming Library
activities, including the return of the first in person children’s program.

6. Friends of the Saratoga Libraries Report
Recommended Action:
Receive Friends of the Saratoga Libraries report.

7. Library & Community Engagement Commission Chair Report
Recommended Action:
Receive Library & Community Engagement Commission Chair report.
Chair Lewis thanked the Commission for its efforts on the work plan and shared that the
City Council approved the proposed work plan in March.
8. City of Saratoga Report
Recommended Action:
Receive City of Saratoga report.
Crystal Bothelio, Assistant City Manager, provided an update on virtual meetings,
Commission recruitments, Arbor Day, Safe Routes to School, COVID-19 testing, and
Silicon Valley Clean Energy’s teen film competition.
9. Community News & Trends
Recommended Action:
Share news and trends within the community.
Commissioner Gulino commented on the growing popularity wearables.

AGENDA ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING – JUNE 13, 2022
Chair Lewis shared that he may request a different start time for the June 13 meeting, if that
would work well for the rest of the Commission.
Commissioner Gulino discussed travel plans near the next meeting.
The Commission agreed to discuss implementation of the work plan, including possible
subcommittee assignments, at the next meeting.

Chair Lewis adjourned the meeting at 9:14 p.m.
