Comments Thank you TSC for choosing to install "speed humps" on Reid
Lane. I recognize that speed humps/bumps often become
controversial, though I debate the accuracy of arguments made
against speed reduction tools. I drive on Reid Lane at least once
every day and walk the full length of Reid nearly as often. I have
seen / experienced the positive impact that these four (4) humps
have made in the last +/- 90 days. Though some Saratoga HS
drivers still choose to dramatically exceed the speed limit on Reid
and 'fly' over the humps, most drivers appear to respect the law
and allow the humps to remind them to drive with caution. It is
my observation (as a driver) that the height, quantity, and
location of the new speed humps on Reid were intelligently and
capably designed (likely thnx to Emma Burkhalter!) and installed.
THANK YOU TSC (and Emma) and the City of Saratoga for
continuing to engage with our community and making our streets
safe.

Hi Emma,
Brenda and I cannot make the meeting tomorrow night. I assume you would not delay our
Ravenwood agenda item. Can you let us know if the committee has any other safety measures to
look at? Maybe they will approve speed humps?
I attached a spreadsheet that has our neighbors names and the responses from a little over half.
Maybe you can just tell the committee that 50% plus people are OK with speed humps with most OK
with speed humps and signs placed at property lines.
Also, the key to the data is the following (and is in the spreadsheet):
1 = Yes; 0 = No; blank = no response yet
Thanks
Daryl

Hi,
I have been referred to you by my neighbor, Daryl Hoot, who has been speaking for the neighbors on
Ravenwood Dr, our street, regarding the solutions to speeding of Marshall Lane parents from Quito to
Marshall lane in the AMs and PMs and the safety of those families and children who both live on the
street and walk to school daily.
I, my husband and daughter have lived on Ravenwood Dr for 22 years. I have seen some speeding and
mostly not. We live at - 3 houses from the Quito corner, where cars might start to speed up after
turning the corner. As it can be problem, we do feel that the wide majority of school families do NOT
speed, so there is SOME, but not a lot of speeding, as the city has found. In today's sensitive world, we
do understand the fear of something like what occurred not far away in SJ a few years back (last year?)
happening wherein a child's death is due to a speeding car. We do understand Saratoga's preference to
not install speed bumps, as much as that might help. What we do not understand is the thought that
striping the road on both sides will be a solution. It is our feeling that this will be a more dangerous
proposal than leaving the street as it is.
Please consider NOT striping the street. Striping the street will produce 3 results:
1. The street will appear to be a busy street that handles a lot of traffic at all times and will provide the
drivers a feeling of moving at a quick pace - the opposite of what is intended.
2. The striping will provide the drivers a feeling of 'safe haven' to drive at a pace that is still unsafe,
however also leaving them with the feeling that pedestrians are now safe from their speeding as they
should be within the sides of the street opposite the striped lines.
3. The pedestrians most at risk = very young children who do not understand the limits of the "implied" flat
barrier will not be protected truly from the cars on the street. The stripe is s psychological 'barrier' at most
and young children's impulses do not factor into that - it is simply unsafe and not a smart choice.
Please consider these points. We had a young daughter at one time and would not consider the striping
a safe solution. We would worry more if she were told that a stripe would save her. Please. Please
consider the smartest choice.
Thank you,
Brenda and Rob Stribling

I cannot have a speedbump by the oak tree,
because that plowing to get the speedbump
in will disturb the growt and it is a heritage
tree, so I have to protect it for the city. Any
disturbance isn’t good for the roots of that
tree, but if speedbump could be put before
the tree or after the tree that would be
acceptable. I’m so close to Quito that I doubt
there would be a speed bump that close
anyway so I think the problem solved. Good
luck and thank you for all your work on this
project.

Hi Daryl,
We can put your request on the September meeting in three weeks (9/14/23), as long as someone
from your street can be there to represent the item. Otherwise, it will need to wait until the January
meeting, since the November meeting is already pretty busy.
Thanks,

Hi Emma,
First I would like to thank you for your help and support in getting our street (Ravenwood) safe.
I talked to some neighbors and people are not in favor of the bulb out since they are concerned that
drivers will speed after turning and the problem is still there.
At this point everyone seems good with speed humps. What can I do to get these? School just
started so I am anxious to get these in place if we can.
Thanks

#572 McCoy Ave
Date Received: August 16, 2023
Requesting Resident: Vassilios and/or Connie Chrysoglou
Street name and cross street(s)
where the traffic safety concern
is occurring:
McCoy and Berwick
Description of traffic safety
concern:
No speed bump with all other speed bumps too far apart which enables cars
to speed down McCoy Ave. Blind spot on McCoy and Berwick due to the
allowance of a house that is being built almost up to the street on McCoy Ave
and huge trucks being parked there causing a huge blind spot.
Suggestions to address the
traffic safety concern:
Add a few more speed bumps or make it a four way stop on that section.

#574 Lomita Ave and Vickery Ave
Date Received: September 4, 2023
Requesting Resident: John Dickson
Street name and cross street(s)
where the traffic safety concern
is occurring:
Junction of Lomita Avenue and Vickery Avenue
Description of traffic safety
concern:
This T-junction is extremely dangerous. Vehicles approaching the junction
from the Oak Street end along Lomita invariably completely cut the corner to
turn into Vickery. Vehicles coming up Vickery to turn left or right onto Lomita
cut the corner if turning left invariably without hesitation and if turning right
also swing around the corner without hesitation. Given the amount of traffic
passing through this junction particularly for school drop off and pick up we
have a high probability of a serious head on collision.
Suggestions to address the
traffic safety concern:
The traffic needs to be slowed through the junction. A stop sign on all three
entrances to the junction would significantly ameliorate the danger.

#575 Bucknall Rd between Paseo Olivos and Quito Rd
Date Received: September 12, 2023
Requesting Resident: Maria Oswald
Street name and cross street(s)
where the traffic safety concern
is occurring:
Bucknall Road at Paseo Olivos & El Quito Road
Description of traffic safety
concern:
We are new to the neighborhood, and we were rear-ended as we were
turning left into our driveway in August 2023. This was a very scary
experience, especially given that our two young children were in the car. Both
our car and the car that hit us were undrivable and needed to be towed.
Traffic is especially busy on Bucknall Road. To ensure the safety of residents,
pedestrians, and visitors, I am requesting speed bumps to be put on Bucknall
Road at Paseo Olivos and El Quito Road. I am also requesting reduced speed
limit signs (or flashing speed limit signs) and "slow children at play" signs.
Additionally, I am requesting trees by stop signs and at the edges of the road
to be well-trimmed to make it more efficient to check for cars and to drive
safely.
Suggestions to address the
traffic safety concern:
On this road and near this intersection in particular, I am requesting speed
bumps, reduced speed limit signs, and other traffic calming measures to
foster a safe and child friendly neighborhood. I am also requesting "slow
children at play" signs.
Tree/plant trimming at the edges of the road and around the nearby stop sign
will allow for more ease in checking for cars and safe driving.
I was informed that these requests would be on the agenda around January.
Prior to that and due to the importance of safety, can traffic calming
measures be incorporated for the time being such as speed limit signs and
temporary free -standing orange delineator tubes? Thank you.

Date Received: September 15, 2023
Requesting Resident: Chandran Cheriyan
Street name and cross street(s)
where the traffic safety concern
is occurring:
Saratoga-Sunnyvale Rd. & Kirkmont Dr.
Description of traffic safety
concern:
There is a pedestrian crossing on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Rd.near the Kirkmont
Dr. intersection. This is a very busy street with cars going thro’ at very high
speeds. It’s also an area with a fatal accident just waiting to take place.
Drivers don’t pay much attention to the crossing. I live in the area and if I
need to cross the street, I feel safer getting in my car and driving, instead of
walking across. There are many children in the area as well.
Suggestions to address the
traffic safety concern:
I suggest the city install flashing embedded lights that come on as soon as a
pedestrian steps on to the crossing - as exist on other sreets in the city ex.
Saratoga Ave. & Herriman Ave.

Hi Rick,
My name is Aaron Ells and I live locally and use Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road fairly often. I wanted to
make a suggestion for one crosswalk. The crosswalk is located next to Kirkmont Drive. I think it
would be prudent to add lights or something for when a pedestrian is crossing. I've seen pedestrians
run into trouble crossing with drivers not realizing there is a crosswalk there until there's a person in
the middle of the road. I think it may be the only crossing on that street without a traffic light of
some sort with it.
Anyway, I'm sure this is already on your radar, but just wanted to provide the suggestion.
Thanks,
Aaron Ells

#578 Bainter Ave at Ravine Rd
Date Received: December 1, 2023
Requesting Resident: Kapil Nanda
Street name and cross street(s)
where the traffic safety concern
is occurring:
Bainter and Ravine
Description of traffic safety
concern:
While driving on Bainter Avenue towards Austin, it is a 2 way stop. There is no
stop sign on Ravine, and due to the angles of the road, it causes a blind spot
for cars travelling on Bainter Avenue. You are only able to see far enough
around the corner from the vehicle by pulling forward at the stop bar until
you are nearly halfway through the intersection and now in the travel path of
other vehicles. I and my family drive by 10-20 times a day and this is an
extremely dangerous intersection. I request that this intersection be changed
to a 4 way stop.
Suggestions to address the
traffic safety concern:
I request that this intersection be changed to a 4 way stop.

Thanks, Emma for organizing the meeting agenda. Regarding the item "Discuss School Circulation (follow‐up
from September 14, 2023 meeting)". I reached out to some of the parents, here is a list of issues & suggestions
I received for the RMS drop‐off/pickup experience, hopefully, help to facilitate the discussion,
1) Pick‐up/Drop off time, and traffic
‐ Drop off early or pick up late, or have kids walk from RMS to the Library:
Concerns about the traffic at the intersection
May need to organize a few kids to go together
‐ RMS, Sacred Heart, and St. Andrew all have traffic; Can we ask the three schools to collaborate, so they don't
all go at the same time?
‐ School bus possible?
2) Saratoga Ave:
‐ From the Library, turn right onto Fruitvale: Very bad traffic, often takes well over 10 minutes to 30 minutes
‐ 早上从sacred heart 出来的车,有时候为了让去sacred heart 的车左转,硬是堵着直行道不走。要等对
面的车左转完,才直行
3) RMS front parking lot:
There is only one drop‐off/pick‐up lane. Can we change it to 2 ‐ 3 lanes?
4) RMS back parking lot:
There is a shuttle bus parked on the street every morning during the drop‐off time in front of the post office;
many parents park there in the afternoon during the pickup time. Can we prohibit parking during certain
hours?
Doesn't move
The right‐turn traffic from Fruitvale to Allendale will be blocked by straight traffic, and also have to yield to the
pedestrians/students crossing the street.
Is it possible to add a right‐turn lane (e.g. borrow the city parking lot?)
