Library Commission
December 13, 1989

A meeting of the Library Commission was held Wednesday
evening, December 13, 1989. Following is a summary of the
action taken.
I. Roll Call
Commissioners present: Dyer, Kills, Moloney,
Peacock, Wood
Commissioners absent: Moore (excused)
Newby (excused)
II. Report on Posting of Commission genda
The agenda was posted on December I, 1989.
III. AgDroval of Minu s
The October 25, 1989, minutes were approved as
written.
IV. Old $usiness
A. Roy Swanson, Parks & Buildings Superintendent
- update on Library Landscaping
Mr. Swanson did not attend the meeting; there
was no discussion of this item.
B. Wish List - To be Continued by Commissioners
Commissioners discussed things which they
would like for the Library to add. These
include better identification of the Young
Adult section; more current movies, current
events books, and business and investment
related information. It was also suggested
that staff consider use of plastic cards
for patrons to operate the copy machine
rather than coins. Library Supervisor Dolly
Barnes would like to see the library able to
be open every morning. She also advised the
Commission that the library will be getting a
computerized magazine index system. County
Librarian Susan Fuller discussed plans to
install an integrated on-line computer
catalog system.
V. New Bus~,ness
A. pChildren's Services Today & Tomorrow" -
Diana Colby, Children's Librarian
Children's Librarian Diana Colby reported on
the program serving children both in the

Library and outside in the schools.

Susan Fulled, County Librarian
Susan Fuller reported that 1) minutes from other
Library Commissions are on file at the Library, 2)
the next CALTAC workshop will be March 3 in
Fremont, and 3) higher than anticipated revenues
for 1988/89 resulted in a healthy fund balance
which primarily went into the book budget. Some of
the funds are also being set aside far the catalog
system.
Dolly Bares., Community Library Sgnervisor
Dolly Barnes reported that 1) the Library
continues to be busy despite the unavailability of
some of the book collection due to the earthquake,
and 2) they will be closed far recarpeting and
restacking of all the books from December 28
through January 17. Some other refurbishing will
be done at the same time.
Carolyn Ring, City Staff Representative
Carolyn Ring 1) distributed an article from the
State Library newsletter describing earthquake
damage to the various area libraries, and 2)
described the criteria and process for submittal
of project proposals for the HCD Block Grant
program.
David Newby. Commissionmember
Carolyn Ring reported in David Newby's absence
that he had attended the November 15 City Council
meeting and had nothing of substance to report on
the meeting.
Barbara Wood, Chair
Barbara Wood reported that 1) she had attended the
CALTAC meeting in Oakland November 11, and 2) she
is still pursuing the opportunity to obtain back
copies of the Saratoga Star.

Barbara wood introduced Roberta Gies who attended
as the Friends of the Library representative.
